当地时间2001年9月11日早晨，19名基地组织恐怖份子劫持4架民航客机，其中两架飞机分别撞向纽约世界贸易中心双塔，造成飞机上的所有人以及世贸中心大楼中许多人死亡，世贸中心大楼在两小时内倒塌，临近的其他建筑也被摧毁或损坏。
第3架被劫持的飞机撞向位于弗吉尼亚州阿灵顿县的五角大楼，第4架飞机在宾夕法尼亚州的一个乡村坠毁。4架被劫持的飞机上均无人生还，这起恐怖袭击事件造成近3000人死亡或失踪。
9.11恐怖袭击事件是和平时期美国本土首次遭受来自空中的袭击，美国政府事后对实施恐袭的基地组织恐怖份子予以强硬回击。巴基斯坦当地时间2011年5月2日，美国海豹特种部队在巴基斯坦境内的一次军事行动中，成功击毙了基地组织头目奥萨马．本．拉登。
