Yao Beina Passed Away on Monday, Doctor Yao Xiaoming Involved in Live Organ Harvest
Mainland singer Yao Beina passed away due to a relapse
of breast cancer.
Her family and fans are still in mourning.
Her remains, which were photographed by a Shenzhen
Evening News reporter who posed as a doctor’s assistant,
triggered a war of words regarding mainland journalistic
ethics.
Following this scandal, the scandal of Yao Xiaoming’s
suspected involvement in live organ harvesting –
taking Falun Gong practitioners’ corneas – was revealed.
On Jan. 16, Yao Beina passed away at Peking University
Shenzhen Hospital.
The next day, the Shenzhen Evening News published
many reports regarding her death
and Shenzhen ophthalmologist Yao Xiaoming’s
entire cornea removal surgery.
On the early morning of the 17th, the well-known
entertainment resource “Entertainment Secret"
posted an article from a media person on its microblog.
The article said that they scheduled a time to obtain
information from Dr. Yao Xiaoming and realized
he committed to give exclusive news to the Evening News.
On the evening of the 16th, three Shenzhen Evening News
reporters disguised as Dr. Yao Xiaoming’s assistants took
photographs at the morgue.
They were found by Yao’s family and a quarrel ensued.
Finally, the owner of Huayi company, Yao Beina’s
employer, came out to delete the pictures on the camera.
The incident triggered widespread criticism.
On Jan. 17, Sina launched survey.
By 16:00 on the 19th, about 35,000 people voted.
95.9 percent of voters believe that this practice
violated journalistic ethics.
The war of words regarding journalism ethics is not over.
Yao Xiaoming is exposed to have practiced live organ
harvesting without explaining the risks to the cornea donor.
Cui Congzheng, a well-known Internet charity volunteer,
began to criticize Yao Xiaoming in 2013.
On several websites he posted that in December 1999,
Yao Xiaoming pushed Yao Ping to become a live cornea
donor without explaining the surgery consequences
using the excuse that reporters were coming.
Following that, he even distorted medical records
to slander live a cornea donor volunteer.
Yang Ping was the second living cornea donor in China.
She voluntarily donated her left cornea because
she had been blind for many years.
However, after the surgery, she had inflammation, secretions,
sunken eyelids, a concaved left cheek, and other symptoms.
She sued Dr. Yao Xiaoming because she had
a right to know the truth before the surgery.
The case was referred to as the first case of a living donor.
Taiwan International Care Association for Organ Transplant
Vice President Huang Shi-wei: “The donor will be paid
by health insurance for organ transplantation without
involving any doctor’s interest issue in Taiwan.
It’s entirely profit-driven in mainland.
We found lots of grabbing organs, cheating donors
to donate organs for profit with many reports."
In addition, on Dec. 23, 2014, International Organization
to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong, headquartered
in New York, released a list from Guangdong non-military
medical institution which is suspected to be involved
in live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners.
Yao Xiaoming is also on the list of 832 names
from 68 hospital in Guangdong Province.
The notice said Yao Xiaoming completed more than
1,000 corneal transplantations as a Shenzhen Eye Hospital
cornea and ocular Ward MD and Executive Director
of the Eye Bank.
Cui Congzheng also exposed that the so-called
Shenzhen Eye Bank, Shenzhen Red Cross Eye Bank,
Shenzhen Lions Eye Bank all became Dr. Yao
Xiaoming’s eye banks.
Yao Xiaoming required patients to donate and threatened
patients with calling the public security to exterminate them.
He also threatened Cui Congzheng.
Huang Shiwei: “The most important thing
is that it has two features.
The first one is it’s a completely opaque organ transplant
environment.
The second is that it is a completely
profit-driven environment.
There are very many incredible things happening."
Taiwan Mental Health Foundation Forum Convenor
Chen Yanling: “the law has no way to completely
regulate human behavior.
So you will certainly be disappointed when
you put your own life, or the conscience values
such as human existence entirely in the hands of the law."
After the Yao Beina remains incident, Yao Xiaoming
was also accused of naming the Shenzhen Eye Bank
Xiaoming Charity Fund after himself.
Shenzhen Evening News and other foundations advocated
to establish the Yao Beina Bright Fund without
Yao Beina families’ consent when Yao Beina passed away.
The foundation even received two donations.
After receiving Huayi Music protest statement,
the Shenzhen Evening News apologized on the 18th
by withdrawing the project initiative
and returning the two donations.
