Hu Deping Takes Over Chinese Liberal Magazine.
The politically outspoken magazine Yanhuang Chunqiu was
recently said to be officially “incorporated" by the regime.
It experienced personnel changes in the leadership.
Director Du Daozheng has announced to step down.
Hu Deping, the son of former Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
general secretary Hu Yaobang, will become the director.
Lu De, the son of former deputy Prime Minister of the State
Council Lu Dingyi, will become the executive deputy director
and legal representative.
Hu Deping’s leadership was planned to save Yanhuang
Chunqiu prior to the CCP taking over the magazine.
Radio Free Asia reported, Yanhuang Chunqiu announced
the retirement of director Du Daozheng in the meeting
on Oct. 24, and relevant changes in senior management.
The NTD reporter confirmed this news
through deputy director Yang Jisheng.
Reporter: “Is Mr. Hu Deping the new director
of Yanhuang Chunqiu? "
Yanhuang Chunqiu deputy director Yang Jisheng:
“Yes, that’s right."
Reporter: “What will be Mr. Du Daozheng’s role in future?"
Yang Jisheng: “He is the honorary director, who will be
consulted on major issues.
He still holds the right to speak. But, he is just too old
and in poor health."
It’s been speculated that Yanhuang Chunqiu’s personnel
change is linked to the official “forced incorporation."
Media reported that state media demanded the magazine
change the leadership and administrative structure.
It will be managed by China National Academy of Arts
under the Ministry of Culture.
91-year-old former director Du Daozheng told NTD in a
previous interview that Yanhuang Chunqiu was under
jurisdiction of China Yan Huang Culture Research Association.
He was very worried about independence of the magazine
jeopardized by the shift of administrative organization.
Du Daozheng also revealed that the decision
was very abrupt.
Without any prior contact with the magazine, the CCP even
imposed verbal threats that should the relevant registration
not be accomplished in two months, the magazine will face
the risk of closing down.
Du Daozheng said that if the magazine would become a
mouthpiece for the Communist regime like People’s Daily
or the QSTheory.cn, Yanhuang Chunqiu would rather
cease publication.
Some analysts pointed out, Hu Deping, known as the spiritual
leader of the princelings’ rightist, obviously was trying to save
Yanhuang Chunqiu by taking over the director position prior
to the magazine being incorporated.
It is said that Du Daozheng has initiated the invitation to
have Hu Deping and Lu De hold senior positions as both
of them share plenty of political sources and have deep
relationships with the incumbent Communist leaders.
They might not change the CCP decision to incorporate
the magazine, but the independence and original mission
of Yanhuang Chunqiu will remain unchanged.
NTD reporter: “What effect will new director, Mr. Hu Deping,
have on the future development of Yanhuang Chunqiu?"
Yang Jisheng: “To adhere to the mission of Yanhuang
Chunqiu. That’s the idea to be implemented."
Reporter: “What do you think of his identity in resisting
the review of the magazine?"
Yang Jisheng: “We hope there’ll be some help.
But it’s hard to say, actually."
Du Daozheng seemed to share the same concern.
As for the future of the magazine, he said, it is not very clear
now, but he hopes Hu Deping and Lu De can stand strong!
Bao Tong, former secretary of Communist Party General
Secretary Zhao Ziyang: “Du Hu Deping hopes Mr. Hu Deping
and Mr. Lu De can build a better business for his magazine.
I believe it is his hope. According to my understanding of
both Mr. Hu and Mr. Du, I believe they will do things well,
I hope they can do better than in the past!"
NTD has learnt from Yang Jisheng that the incorporation of
Yanhuang Chunqiu by the Ministry of Culture is still ongoing.
Although almost all the staff of the magazine are in silent
boycott and the magazine’s legal representative has been
slow in replacing the authorities stamp on the document,
the hope to change the authorities’ order is slim.
By end of November at the latest, incorporation formalities
are expected to be completed.
