25th Anniversary of June 4: The Strongest Maintenance of
Stability in History
The 25 anniversary of June 4 is coming.
The commemorations and democracy activists
in China have not yet got started.
In contrast, stability operations have started from Beijing
to Shenzhen, spreading to the whole of China.
Compared to previous years, more stringent measures are
being taken for suppression.
Many student leaders, dissidents, artists and scholars
have been arrested.
Many “sensitive" people have also suffered all kinds
of harassment and threats from the authorities.
Some of them are even under house
arrest or missing.
June 4, 2014 is the 25th anniversary of the
Tiananmen Square massacre.
As the anniversary approaches, the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) has started a comprehensive maintenance of stability.
Unlike previous years, the maintenance of stability this year
has been called the most serious in recent years.
Hu Jia, a promoter of the memorial activity “June 4 – return
to Tiananmen Square" pointed out that in recent years, the
CCP escalated the stability operations.
The 24 anniversary last year was seen as the most
intense of the past 10 years.
This year, these stability operations have reached a peak
due to the duration, strength and the scope.
Hu Jia, social activist: “The stability maintenance this year
has been for the longest period since 1989, I personally think.
It started from January17, the 9th anniversary
of the death of Mr. Zhao Ziyang.
It will continue until June 8, which is not seen before.
The stability maintenance efforts over ‘June 4’ are
conducted across the whole country."
Since March this year, the stakeholders of “89 pro-democracy"
were arrested constantly.
Many of them are celebrities. Among them, Xu Guang, one
of the founders of the Democratic Party, had participated in
the 1989 “June 4th" Movement.
Artist Chen Guang held a memorial “performance art" for
“June 4th" on April 29 this year.
Lawyer Pu Zhiqiang and Professor Hao Jian participated in
the “Tiananmen Memorial Seminar" in Beijing on May 3.
These people are under criminal detention by the CCP on
suspicion of “subversion of state power", “making trouble"
and other offenses.
Hu Jia: “Five years ago, the number of citizens who engaged
in the Tiananmen seminar were more than this year; nothing
happened to them.
The most is that some of them were asked to speak to police.
This time, after more than a dozen citizens participated in this
meeting, five people were arrested immediately in the form of
criminal detention. This didn’t happen in the past – from 1989.
I mean, to catch so many people for the June 4th memorial,
who are quite influential with the community."
A well as arresting pro-democracy activists, the CCP recently
warned the dissidents and human rights activists with threats;
e.g, surveillance, house arrests and forced evictions in Beijing,
disappearances and other kinds of harassment and pressure.
Tiananmen Mother Zhang Xianling: “The most prominent
feature this year is to prevent a reporter from interviewing.
Reporters are blocked since April. There are a lot of check
points. They follow me if I go out.
I was had to travel in their cars. I did not think they would be
so nervous this year."
Hu Jia: “Some defenders in Beijing were told by the national
security officers not to stay in Beijing during the June 4 period.
They want to promote tourism. There are a lot of people being
pressurised. They were warned of house arrest."
Hu pointed out that more and more people from the mainland
could use the Internet and other methods to learn of “June 4th"
truth.
The awaken citizens have come out and found various ways
to support “June Fourth". This situation made the CCP panic.
Hu believes strengthening actions this year by the CCP could
be related to the “return to Tiananmen Square" and “June 4th"
civic action.
Hu Jia: “There have been many civic actors throughout China.
I mean the citizens outside Beijing. They were warned by the
authorities and forbidden to go to Beijing during June 4th.
They are not allowed to participate in
the return to Tiananmen action.
In the past ten years, I have never seen a June 4 action
which could make the authorities use so much power
for the maintenance of stability containment.
I think this different point is because we initiate this reality
in action – the streets action for June 4."
Hu also pointed out that the current social conflicts
continue to accumulate in China.
The CCP is very worried of actions such as “return to
Tiananmen Square".
These actions could become a flashpoint for public
dissatisfaction with the CCP.
The actions were organized and taken on streets. So the CCP
will spare no effort to suppress the “June 4th" dissidents.
