Wu Tao: One More Bargaining Chip for Xi to Suppress Zhou?
Guo Yongxiang, secretary for Zhou Yongkang, the former
Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Politics
and Law Committee, was investigated by the CCP Central
Discipline Inspection Commission.
Wu Tao, deputy head of Chengdu Jinjiang District Police
Branch Bureau, who was known as “the chamberlain”
of Li Chuncheng, the former CCP Sichuan Provincial Deputy
Secretary, was removed last year by the Discipline Inspection Commission.
Analysts commented that controlling Wu Tao gives Xi Jinping,
the General Secretary of the CCP, one more bargaining chip
to suppress Zhou Yongkang and other members
of Jiang’s gang.
On June 26, Beijing News reported that Wu Tao, Deputy
Head of the Police Branch Bureau and Deputy District Leader
of Jinjiang District, Chengdu City, Sichuan province,
was taken away for investigation by the Discipline Inspection Commission around May 23.
An insider from the Chengdu Police bureau said that Wu Tao
had four passports which were issued by the police system.
In the middle of May, Wu Tao prepared to take a huge sum
of money and flee China.
The report said that Wu Tao has a very close relationship
with Li Chuncheng and was considered his “butler.”
Qu Songzhi, the wife of Li Chuncheng, also under
investigation, had two passports which were issued under Wu Tao’s arrangement.
On June 25, on the Jinjiang district official website,
contents relating to Wu Tao were deleted.
At present, the related officials who helped issue
the passports have been investigated.
Liu Yinquan, the chair of the China Social Democratic Party,
pointed out that Wu Tao is the head of a police bureau associated with the Politics and Law system.
The investigation into him by Central Discipline Inspection
Commission is likely linked to the wave of sacked Zhou Yongkang followers.
Liu Yinquan, chair of the China Social Democratic Party:
“This shows that Li Chuncheng’s case is being investigated further.
It’s possible that all officials that had a close relationship
with Li Chuncheng, especially the ones who were promoted
by Li Chuncheng and were involved in corruption with him,
will be investigated.”
Hua Po, a Beijing political observer, believes that currently,
Xi Jinping may expose some major scandals to build his reputation and combat his opponents.
The investigation of Wu Tao gives Xi Jinping the upper hand
in suppressing Zhou Yongkang and others in Jiang’s gang.
Hua Po, a Beijing political observer: “Everybody knows that
the relationship between Li Chuncheng and Zhou Yongkang was very close.
Li was the cowboy of Zhou, and Wu Tao, the head
of the police branch bureau, was the cowboy of Li.
That’s the reason why I think the Wu Tao report is an attack
on the supporters, which means it points to Zhou Yongkang.”
Since Xi Jinping came to power, Zhou Yongkang continually
controlled Sichuan political “earthquakes.”
At the beginning of last December, Li Chuncheng,
the Zhou Yongkang loyalist, was sacked and became
the first provincial level official to be removed
after the 18th Congress.
With the progress of Li Chuncheng’s investigation,
Deng Hong, the chairman of Wealthy Chengdu Conference
and Travel Group, Wang Junlin, the boss of Lang Jiu,
Liu Han, the chairman of Jinlu Group, and Dai Xiaoming,
the chairman of Chengdu Industrial Investigation Group,
were removed one by one.
On June 23, Guo Yongxiang, Zhou Yongkang’s former
secretary of of years, was investigated, and became
the second high ranking Sichuan official to be removed
after the 18th Congress.
In addition, Wu Yongwen, the former secretary of Hubei
Politics and Law Committee, who is considered to be
a hardcore loyalist of Zhou Yongkang, was investigated
at the end of last year.
Public opinion believes that these series of cases is a sign
that Xi Jinping is targeting Zhou Yongkang in his recent cleaning of Jiang’s gang.
Hua Po: “Targeting Zhou Yongkang and those in Jiang’s gang,
Xi Jinping will suppress them continually, because
the interest group has never been arrested without fighting.
They will do a series of actions.
Zhou Yongkang was secretary of Central Politics and Law
Committee, and his force can’t be ignored because
he controlled the huge Politics and Law system
for a long time.
Handling these cases, the first action is to not
let Zhou Yongkang act.”
Outpost magazine of Hong Kong revealed that Xi Jinping
deprived “amnesty” of former and current members
of the Standing Committee in a Zhongnanhai
Politburo Standing Committee meeting, and did away with
the usual internal order that members of Standing
Committee can’t be investigated.
If the reported evidence is confirmed and the impact inside
and outside China is bad, no matter whether the official
is a current or retired member of Standing Committee,
he must be investigated and his case will be recorded.
The report said, this regular caused new and old members
of Jiang’s gang who are involved in corruption or promiscuous scandals to be scared and unable sleep well.
Analysts believe Zhou Yongkang and Jia Qinglin,
who are ”big tiger level” officials, may be investigated.
Zeng Qinghong, the former CCP Vice President,
is classified as a “high-risk candidate.”
