Activist Appeals for Ai Weiwei’s Release
Recently, Zhao Lianhai, an activist for parents
of children harmed in the 08 China Milk scandal,
criticized the arrest of renowned artist Ai Weiwei.
He posted a video online, appealing to authorities
for the release of Ai Weiwei and all other activists.
Late 2010, Zhao Lianhai was released by authorities
on bail for medical treatment. Since he is monitored,
Zhao hasn’t appeared in public until May 5,
when he asked his friends to post his video online
to appeal for Ai Weiwei and other arrested activists,
and to express his depression.
Zhao Lianhai: “Authorities have made no comment
on Ai Weiwei’s issue yet. From our perspectives,
we hope the authorities treat people better.”
Zhao Lianhai is saddened by Ai Weiwei’s arrest.
He realized that he should make his voice heard.
He hoped authorities would soon release Ai Weiwei
as well as all other activists, lawyers and
prisoners of conscience.
He hopes that China can follow a legal track.
Since his arrest, Ai Weiwei is still unreachable.
Days before his arrest, he told Suddeutsche Zeitung
that China is still currently in “a dark age.”
Despite the rapid economic growth,
China’s freedom of speech is at an all time low.
After Beijing police arrested Ai Weiwei,
around 60 police searched Ai’s studio and house,
confiscating 30 computers and many documents.
Zhao Lianhai: “We hope China will not become
another Libya, with such violent upheavals.”
In Zhao’s video online, his son, who developed
kidney stones from the tainted milk, was in his arms.
Meanwhile, Zhao said on his microblog,
that instead of keeping silent,
he will make his voice heard whenever possible
to protect more people from being kidnapped.
Zhao told Free Asia Radio that he was very upset
to see how many friends, activists, lawyers,
and those who speak up are arrested or kidnapped.
Zhao said that after he was released on bail
for medical treatment, he was closely monitored
by authorities, with many monitors living downstairs.
Zhao did not agree with authorities’ treatment
of him as an ordinary citizen, so he never gave in.
Now he is under house arrest,
with all public activities and interviews banned.
Though deprived of freedom, he does not stop
to pay attention to human rights protection.
