Unlike International Media, Chinese Media Negatively Report Hong Kong Democracy Protests

Hong Kong, the world’s financial center, has become
the limelight of global media recently.
International media have not only continuously attached
much importance to the largest ever on-going
anti-government rally since 2003 in the “Pearl of the Orient,"
but have also made timely reports.
However, China’s official media surprisingly turned out
to be “low-key."
In addition, they even spread negative propaganda.

On Sept. 30, major international media continued
to cover Hong Kong’s Occupy Central protests.

In addition to the timely multi-faceted follow-up coverage,
NTD has broadcast various commentary and analysis.

Chinese headline of Radio France Internationale (RFI)
on Sept. 30: Occupy Central Movement Continues.
Tens of thousands of HK People Rallied Again
on Monday Night;
Chinese headline of Voice of American (VOA):
“Hong Kong Is Crazy" and “Umbrella Revolution";
Radio Free Asia reported, “The information of the repression
against Occupy Central protesters blocked
on social networking;
People voiced: “Hong Kong to Hold On";
Central News Agency (CAN): “Tens of Thousands
of Occupy Central Protesters Continue to Rally
for Democracy in Hong Kong."

CNN, Al Jazeera, Reuters, Deutsche Welle, New York Times
and other Western mainstream media also have follow-up coverage.

The day before, major British newspapers also paid a lot
of attention to Hong Kong’s democracy protest.

On Sept. 29, BBC published official statements from
the U.S., the U.K. and Japanese media coverage of Hong Kong.

Headline of the Financial Times read, “Hong Kong
pro-democracy protests swell as riot police back off";
The Independent said, “Hong Kong grows up";
The Guardian quoted the initiator of Occupy Central
Benny Tai as saying, “Beijing now sees it; the world sees it;
CY Leung, do you see it?"

Among Hong Kong’s local media, the Apple Daily
timely followed up with the latest situation.
As to the Epoch Times Hong Kong, it has been
highly praised by Hong Kong people.
On the morning of Sept. 29, Hong Kong people called,
“Only if Leung Chun-ying Steps Down!" appeared
on the headline of the Epoch Times, which was used
by Hong Kong people as posters to be posted
on various places in Hong Kong.

Surprisingly, China’s official media showed rare silence.

It simply made some sporadic reports totally opposite
to the atmosphere of the Occupy Central rallies.

On Sept. 28, Xinhua.com published and article entitled,
“Hong Kong Liaison Office issued a statement
to strongly condemn the unlawful rallies launched
by Occupy Central."
Following that, news regarding Hong Kong was nonexistent
on the website’s homepage for two consecutive days.

On Sept. 29, the people.com published a commentary saying,
“How can those who are attached to colonization rules
sincerely support universal suffrage?"

On Sept. 30, another article published to exaggerate
the peacefulness in Hong Kong urged Hong Kong people
to “feel the taste and achievements of their motherland."

On Sept. 28, China News Network reported that Tamar Park
is, “a green space for people to enjoy."

A video clip from Shanghai Oriental TV referred to the crowd
participating in the Occupy Central movements as “Tens
of thousands of people rally to celebrate National Day
and support for the implementation of universal suffrage."
The video clip was broadcast by many Chinese media outlets
including CCTV network.

Jia Pin from the Southern Street Movement: “Their reporting
Hong Kong’s Occupy Central rallies as activities celebrating
National Day is in fact a serious distortion of facts, slander
and a denigration of Hong Kong’s Occupy Central activities.
Nowadays, official propaganda can no longer deceive people.
After visiting foreign websites, you will be able
to understand the true facts of many things."

Zhu Xinxin, former editor of Hebei People Radio:
“The Chinese regime’s reluctance to report this event
actually reflects its internal fear.

In fact, it dares not to talk about the reasons and the requests
claimed by the protesters.
It is afraid that once people in China know about what’s
happening in Hong Kong, there may be a chain effect,
and they may take action to support Hong Kong.

In the meantime, websites in China have completely blocked
the information regarding Hong Kong police’s crackdown
on the protests. “

But the supporting voices have been heard
in various places across China.

Jia Pin: “These days, I noticed that many friends
in several cities including Xi’an, Fuzhou, Changsha, Shanghai,
Beijing, etc. held posters to voice their support
for Hong Kong’s Occupy Central movement.
Many people’s spreading the information
on social networking is also a kind of support."

Former Tiananmen Square democracy movement student
and activist Tang Baiqiao posted a contrast graph on his
Facebook page.

On one side, tens of thousands of people voluntarily rally
to say no to the Communist regime and the puppet
administration of Hong Kong; on the other side,
a few people hired by the regime with money
to serve as the participants are celebrating
the National Day on Oct. 1.
Tang Baiqiao commented that though it’s such
a stark contrast, the Communist regime even alleged
that there were tens of thousands of participants
in the celebration.
It’s indeed shameful for all Chinese people.
