23rd Anniversary of June 4: Dissidents Face Summonses
The 23rd anniversary of June 4 is coming.
Preparation of commemoration activities by overseas
democracy and human rights organizations is almost ready.
However, in mainland China, the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) is deploying its annual monitoring force.
Recently, dissidents and human rights activists all over
China were being summonsed and arrested.
The Chinese public believe that the autocratic regime
is extremely weak now.
For the 23rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square
massacre, many democracy and human rights
activists overseas have started planning activities
to commemorate this historic event.
In April, the Committee in Commemoration of June 4
in Melbourne announced that the massacre 23 years ago
has led to today’s extreme corruption in China’s officialdom.
It is a morally bankrupt society, with severe destruction
of natural and cultural environments.
The committee is hosting June 4 commemoration activities
in Melbourne and invites domestic and overseas Chinese to attend and offer advice.
It is now only 10 days until June 4.
Organizations in Germany have decided to rally in front
of China’s consulate in Frankfurt on June 4.
This is to protest against the CCP’s despotism,
and appeal for political reforms.
Organizations include Federation for a Democratic China;
Forum for a Democratic China and Asia;
Independent Chinese PEN Center;
Chinese Tibetan Friendship Society Europe;
Associations in Germany such as Germany Chinese
student and scholar association; Germany Overseas Chinese association.
In Paris, Human rights organizations like Solidarity China
will host a candlelight vigil in the Human Rights Plaza near the Eiffel Tower on the evening of June 3.
Fang Zheng, a June 4 witness, said that although it is the
23rd anniversary of June 4, the truth is still being concealed.
China’s human rights situation is getting worse.
Fang Zheng: “It’s 23 years since the June 4 Massacre.
China’s human rights situation has not improved at all,
and the truth about June 4 is deeply concealed.
People cannot talk about it, and more facts are concealed
without just investigation. It makes people indignant.”
In contrast, the CCP intensified persecution and monitoring
of dissidents and human rights activists before June 4.
Dissidents such as Lü Gengsong, Chen Shuqing and
Shandong University Professor Sun Wenguang
from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, were summonsed,
warned and placed under house arrested, respectively.
Lü Gengsong has been summonsed several times
and many democracy activists were treated brutally.
Lü Gengsong: “June 4 is coming,
and many people come to visit me.
We only have common chats, but they
get nervous and monitor me.
They think we are having some activities or have
heard something, so they monitor and arrest me.”
Lü Gengsong said that his being released after
the summons this time has something to do with negotiating other activities on that day.
Sun Wenguang told NTD that for 10 days after May 15,
he has been tracked and monitored by police.
Sun Wenguang (Prof. of Shandong Univ.):
“June 4 is coming.
They usually stand guard 3 or 4 days ahead,
but this year is 19 days.”
Fang Zheng: “Now everyday is a sensitive day to the CCP,
and June 4 is an especially tough and sensitive one.
Therefore, at this moment, the CCP arrests
more people to be able to get through it.
It does that every year ahead of June 4.”
Fang Zheng said the CCP focuses on maintaining stability
at this time because it has less and less legitimacy to rule.
It’s power is even weaker and controls
fewer people’s hearts.
Therefore, the CCP is using all means
to maintain and elongate its power.
