Attacking Thai Flight Attendant Raises Discussions
of Mainland Tourists Image Abroad.
Recently, a Chinese tourist on a Thai flight had an altercation
with the flight attendant and angrily poured hot water on her.
He also shouted he would explode the plane,
later the flight was forced to return.
The incident again raised concerns about Chinese tourists
traveling abroad and their uncivilized images.
Why do Chinese tourists give people such impressions?
Let us take a look.
It is understood that the Thai Air plane FD9101 was flying
from Bangkok to Nanjing.
After boarding, two male and two female passengers
wanted the air attendant to change their seats.
Shortly after takeoff, one of them asked for hot water and
the flight attendants explained that it is inconvenient as
the plane had just taken off. One of the men threw nutshells
in the passage and tramped on them to show dissatisfaction.
Later the flight attendant came with hot water.
However as it is low-cost airline, passengers need to
pay 60 baht (about 11 yuan) for it.
The man insisted on a receipt and exchanged in RMB, he
and also shouted: “I cannot afford to spend money!"
At this point, a woman suddenly splashed the whole cup of
boiling water onto the flight attendant, who cried.
After a big scene, the woman knocked on the window and
threatened to jump off the airplane.
The man threatened to explode the plane, two other man
and woman also used rude words to the stewardess.
From the video it can be clearly seen, the man kept yelling at
the flight attendant, and said they would explode the plane.
According to a statement issued by the airline, “The captain
was worried the attitude of the female passenger is likely to
endanger other passengers and disrupt the flight attendant’s
work, so he turned back to Don Muang International Airport."
Later, the four people were punished by the Thai police,
and had to give compensation of 50,000 baht (about 9470
yuan) to the flight attendants; they were also fined. The
flight was delayed for one day before flying to Nanjing.
On Dec. 13 the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) National
Tourism Administration issued a circular:
“Serious damage to the overall image of the people";
It ordered Jiangsu Province tourism sector to investigate the
travel agency.
The travel group leader was suspended for a year.
The relevant tourists were recorded with bad credit with
restricted participation in future flights or groups.
This is the first time the CCP gave out punishment
for overseas travel group’s bad behaviors.
After seeing the news, as well as saying “very shameful", and
“losing face overseas", netizens questioned why the travel
agency was punished. If it is corrupt officials sacked who are
educated by the CCP, will the party deal with it?
Some netizens reflected on the root causes of the frequent
occurrence of similar incidents.
Current affairs commentator Xing Tianxing, “After China was
taken over by the CCP, traditional culture was completely
eradicated.
In China it’s about implementing the party culture, which is
philosophical struggle and fight.
So it gradually lost the traditional etiquette between people.
After losing etiquette, people become ungracious;
After they have earned some money, their mindset
is like a parvenu."
Cultural commentator Ye Kuangzheng, “Through my
observation of the Chinese peoples’ image in history,
I found before the CCP rule, in fact, Chinese people are
more civilized and polite.
But after experiencing the Cultural Revolution,
China’s traditional culture became fragmented.
Many things related to moral and ethical norms are no
longer complied with by people. “
The Wall Street Journal published an article saying that this
is not the first time Chinese passengers “freaked out".
Many bad behaviors earlier are only on domestic flights,
mostly due to flight delays, poor food or poor service.
Previously Chinese tourists are “world famous" because of
lettering on cultural monuments in Egypt, and allowing
children to spitting and urinate everywhere, etc.
The Wall Street Journal also ridiculed, after this incident,
there might be an additional doctrine;
“Prohibit pouring hot water onto flight attendant".
Cultural commentator Ye Kuangzheng, “The extreme pursuit
of money by the Chinese people, has led to a very corrupt
social morality, the rich look down on the poor. Those who
travel abroad are generally richer;
They speak loudly and completely ignore
other people’s feelings."
During the Spring and Autumn Period, Guan Zhong in the
state of Qi called sense of propriety, justice, integrity and
shame the four social bonds. If the four social bonds vanish,
the country is destroyed.
During the Cultural Revolution, Mao Zedong’s “Destroy the
Four Olds" cut the cultural heritage of the Chinese nation.
The CCP has announced the “Chinese outbound travel
civilized behavior guide" as early as in October 2006.
It is to standardize Chinese tourists overseas’ various
uncivilized behaviors.
However, the traditional Chinese virtues of “sense of
propriety, justice, integrity and shame" which have
been destroyed by the CCP, cannot be recalled just by
a document.
