Huge Banner Reading “Leung Chun-ying Step Down" Again Appeared On Lion Rock
Recently, another huge banner demanding Leung Chun-ying
step down appeared on Hong Kong’s Lion Rock.
This seems to conform to what many people believe—
although the Occupy Central movement was forcibly
stopped, efforts and voices seeking democracy and
a general election have been left in Hong Kong people’s soul.
Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement will not end.
The residents will continue to fight for their democratic
future in different ways.
Please look at the following report.
On Dec. 11, Hong Kong government carried out a mandatory
clearance of the main protest site at Admiralty.
This finally seems to have brought an end
to the Occupy Central that started on Sept. 28 and lasted
for two and a half months.
On Dec. 13, a huge banner was again hung on Lion Rock,
a Hong Kong landmark.
The banner said “CY Step Down", demanding chief
executive Leung Chun-ying to resign.
Hong Kong media reports said a huge banner also
appeared on Devil’s Peak besides Lei Yue Mun.
Tang Boqiao, president of New York Democracy University:
“Leung will probably not stay in his current position
for long as a result of the umbrella movement.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had been toughly
suppressing protesters.
However, after the protest cools down, I think the CCP
will make adjustments to their strategy.
Personally I believe they will do something
with Leung Chun-ying.
The reason is that Hong Kong people will never
drop the matter unless Leung steps down."
There were three main occupy areas
in the umbrella movement.
Among them the most important was Admiralty.
The Mongkok site also drew global attention as it was
cleared violently by Hong Kong police last month.
In contrast, the Occupy site at Causeway Bay
is smaller and more peaceful.
The protest there has lasted for nearly 80 days.
As the last occupied site, it may also be subject
to mandatory police clearance on Dec. 15.
Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) and Scholarism
both said they would not start any other protest soon.
In the meantime, both also said they would stick to Civil
Disobedience and not rule out another occupy movement.
Scholarism said other forms of protest. might be used
in future movements.
Tsoi Yiu-Cheong, vice chairman of Hong Kong Alliance
in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China:
”Although Occupy Central will conclude soon,
the democratic movement seeking general election
and democracy in Hong Kong will not stop.
We can even say the umbrella movement has awakened
Tsoi Yiu-Cheong said there is no doubt that Hong Kong’s
democratic movement will succeed and Occupy Central
will keep going in other forms, probably even
on a larger scale.
Tsoi Yiu-Cheong: “Occupy Central did not win a general
election, but it has already been very successful
in educating and encouraging more people
to stand up for democracy."
A Deutsche Welle report quoted Michael Davis,
a legal expert at Hong Kong University.
Davis said that although Occupy Central has concluded
without turning democracy into reality, the student
protesters are still the winners of the first round.
The reason is that they successfully let the whole world
see that Beijing and the Hong Kong government
broke their promises and attempted to run false elections.
Davis regards that as a key achievement
of the student protests.
The report also said that now the CCP leaders turned
themselves into opponents of Hong Kong’s young people.
In addition, Beijing has to face Hong Kong’s political mess.
Ms. Tang, Hong Kong resident: “Our next goal is clear.
We want Leung Chun-ying to step down.
He is an agent of the CCP.
He has brought the CCP’s worst tradition and culture to us."
This June, the CCP’s issued a so-called White Paper
on Hong Kong.
The White Paper tempers with the definition
of “One Nation, Two Systems," and thus resulted in strong
resistance by Hong Kong people.
Later on Aug. 31, the CCP’s National People’s Congress
(NPC) announced a reform framework that rules out
real universal suffrage in 2017.
Consequently, many Hong Kong people started on-street
protests, namely, the civil disobedience movement known
as Occupy Central.
The Occupy Central has concluded.
But the civil disobedience movement will move
to the next stage.
Many people believe that the upcoming consultation
on political reform is the next battlefield.
Hong Kong people may seek to reject the NPC’s Aug. 31
decision in the council, such as to force Leung
and the CCP to compromise.
