Umbrella Movement Cleared
Hong Kong Protest Success or Defeat?
December 11, the 75 day Hong Kong Umbrella campaign for
true universal suffrage was cleared by police.
However, the prepared Hong Kong society holds the common
view that site-clearing is just the beginning not the end.
Some Hong Kong people also say the next civil disobedience
may break out any time in pursuit of democracy and freedom.
December 11 evening, Hong Kong police finished cleaning
up the Umbrella campaign’s occupied area in Admiralty and
arrested 249 people, from teenage boys and girls
to an 80-year-old granny; from students to retired people;
from singers to politicians; from lawyers to professors;
from the rich to the poor, involving all ranks.
Hong Kong Legislative Council had 15 members arrested,
which is a record.
Some arrested people have been released since the morning
of the 12th.
So, the site-clearing is it an end or another beginning?
Hong Kong Legislative Council legislator Sin Chung-kai,
“Our two requests include: Leung Chun-ying steps down and
Congress withdraws the 8.31 decision.
I am full of confidence in this movement because it wakes up
the young generation although I believe the decision will not
be implemented in the short term."
Sin Chung-kai believes that this campaign has won the young
generation on behalf of the future which will have a very
positive impact on Hong Kong’s future democratic movement.
Hong Kong citizen Nicole:" We win from the beginning
because the Umbrella campaign ignited the fire of our protest.
The Umbrella movement will be everywhere with this fire after
fire to make the world know Hong Kong people are struggling
and appealing."
Nicole believes that although the Hong Kong government
suppressed with all kinds of dirty tricks, they will never change
Hong Kong people ‘s belief in true universal suffrage.
Nicole said. “Hong Kong people’s struggle is just starting.
They will use another way; not excluding large demonstrations
after the failure of the second political reform."
Radio Free Asia concluded through interviewing student
leaders, students, stars and public that our society consensus is
that site-clearing is not the end, just the beginning.
Any day can become a start point for more civil disobedience.
Nicole pointed out that the 8.31 decision from the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) Congress ignited the protest fire
in Hong Kong.
August 31, the 10th session of the CCP National People’s
Congress passed the resolution on H K Chief Executive’s
Election by giving the right to nominate the Chief Executive
to the 1,200 member electoral commission and request
candidates to be patriotic and love the party.
Hong Kong people, especially young people who were
expecting universal suffrage feel that they have been fooled
by the CCP.
Then they started the protest movement.
Hong Kong Apple Daily pointed out the CCP blatantly tore up
the Basic Law to inhibit the Hong Kong Chief Executive by
loving the party and country and by ignoring Hong Kong ‘s
future safeguard—the Joint Declaration.
It will only make Hong Kong people see the CCP ‘s true face and
strengthen their determination to continue the struggle.
Sin Chung-kai also said Beijing should rethink the reason
for this campaign.
They should review their Hong Kong and Macao policy.
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Umbrella campaign has had a
big influence on the mainland and Taiwan.
Many mainland citizens from Shandong, Jiangsu, Beijing and
other places came to Hong Kong to express support for the
Umbrella campaign .
At least 100 people were arrested due to support for Hong Kong
Occupy Central online.
US political science professor at the City University of New
York, Xia Ming: “Hong Kong is the last city with freedom and
law in China.
It ‘s very important for its stand against China ‘s continuous
expansion of dictatorship with fascist tendencies."
Retired professor of Shandong University, democrat Sun
Wenguang: A lot of mainland people including
students, and intellectuals are concerned about this matter.
Why can ‘t mainland people do it since the Hong Kong people
fight for democracy and universal suffrage so strongly?
Obviously, it triggered the thought."
Sun Wenguang said Hong Kong democratic movement ‘s
pattern, experience, organization form and process can be
a reference for the mainland in the future.
Sun Wenguang also pointed out that Hong Kong democratic
movement also affected Taiwan’s political situation by causing
the pro-Communist Kuomintang defeat.
It also shows that, people have no good purpose to support
Communist repression of a democracy movement.
