Police Clear Protests, Resulting In Many Injuries

Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement has lasted for two months.

Sources told Wall Street Journal that Beijing is weighing
options in response to the demand for universal suffrage
of Chief Executive of Hong Kong.

However, people suspect Beijing’s attitude has not changed,
as the police have cleared the protest sites.

The use of batons, pepper spray and new tear gas
was even more fierce than before.

A reporter was also pressed down on the ground
by the police.

On the morning of Nov. 26, a heated altercation took place
in Mong Kok when people wearing red caps claiming
to assist police in clearing the Mong Kok sites showed up
and their true identity questioned.

Student leader, Joshua Wong: “We hope they (bailiffs)
can explain.

Today, for no reason, a crowd wearing red caps appearing
to be Blue Ribbon supporters (pro-Beijing protesters)
are here to clear the site.

What gives them the power to clear the site?

How can you prove that they are the workers
who have the duty to clear the site?"

Subsequently, riot police intervened.

Following scuffles, the police arrested some protesters.

Among them were Deputy Secretary-General of Hong Kong
Federation of Students, Lester Shum, Scholarism convener
Joshua Wong, and Secretary of Student Union
of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Szeto Tzelong.

Police began to remove roadblocks after the court bailiffs
and plaintiff lawyers read the injunction in Nathan Street.

Reporters were also removed at the scene.

A day earlier, 6,000 police were mobilized to clear
the occupied sites around Argyle road.

Clashes took place when remaining protesters
refused to leave.

Police used force and arrested those who resisted.

Federation of Students, Yvonne Leung: “When we questioned
the charge, it is a matter of if we have violated the injunction
or if it is the police executed the Public Order Ordinance.

The police absolutely have to explain the legal liability
to everyone at the scene."

Hong Kong Legislative Council Leung Kwok-hung: “I believe
the police need to explain when the request to clear
the sites was received from the people who demanded
the injunction."

At the scene: “Explain, explain."

Protesters with banners that read, “I want real
universal suffrage."

At the scene: “I want real universal suffrage,
Leung Chun-ying to step down!"

The clearing lasted into the night with police using batons,
pepper spray and new tear gas to disperse protesters.

The new tear gas has firing range of ten meters, the high
water pressure is more powerful than pepper spray.

Ordinary goggles can’t resist the pressure; the pressure
can easily sting the eyes and cause burning pain.

A protester attacked by the tear gun told reporter,
“I can’t open my eyes anymore.

I have long sleeves, but my arms are hurt."

Hong Kong legislator Albert Chan also showed up
in the protest.

Legislator Albert Chan:"The protesters are very peaceful,
they didn’t use any violence at all.

They just stand in line to face the police.
But once the police use pepper spray or use the new material
(CS spray), you know, lots of people are hurt today."

After nightfall, the battlefield transferred from Nathan Street
to Portland Street, where police clashed with protesters again.

Until 6 a.m. on Nov. 26, police arrested at least 116 protesters,
including the Hong Kong Legislative Council, Leung Kwok-hung.

In this clearance process, a NowTV technician was pressed
down on the ground by the police in the process of assisting
the report.

The entire process was filmed.

NowTV said that the journalist had repeatedly explained
that they were conducting live broadcast.
Police ignored the claim and insisted to drive the journalist
to the roadside.

On the morning of Nov. 26, the Hong Kong Journalists
Association issued a statement to strongly condemn
the arrest of a TV crew member by the police.

“The incident is a serious violation of press freedom.

Demand the release of the journalist and a thorough
investigation of the incident and hold those
who are accountable," said the statement.

Now TV also issued a statement to express the outrage
and regret of the arrest which is believed to have seriously
violated press freedom.

Lawyers are arranging to assist in seeking justice
for the arrested technician.
