The World Wants The Truth Regarding The Death of Activist Cao Shunli
On March 14, prominent human rights activist
Ms. Cao Shunli passed away at a Beijing hospital.
Since the arrest by Beijing police, her health deteriorated.
Beijing was urged to release Cao Shunli.
Her death drew strong condemnation
both at home and abroad.
The public called for a thorough investigation
of her death.
The following is our report.
Cao Shunli had been detained for more than half a year.
She died on the afternoon of March 14.
People worldwide immediately launched
a joint emergency petition to reprimand
the Communist regime for persecuting
Ms. Cao Shunli to death.
Beijing authorities are called on to conduct a thorough
investigation into the death of Cao Shunli,
to hold the responsible person of criminal responsibility,
and a public apology to the people across the country.
As of 7 p.m. on March 16 nearly 2,500 signatures
from at home and abroad have been collected.
Cao Shunli was arrested at Beijing airport in September
when she attempted to board a flight to Geneva to attend
a UN training course with Shanghai activist Chen Jianfang.
Chen Jianfang, Shanghai activist: “It’s impossible that
Ms. Cao’s death in this autocratic country is the last one.
There’ll be more people persecuted to death."
Cao Shunli received a Master’s degree
in Law from Peking University.
She was once employed by the Ministry of Labor
and Personnel.
She became an activist and exposed corruption
at her work units.
Because of her legal advice to petitioners she became
the target of the Beijing authorities.
She went through numerous arrests and re-education
through labor camps.
Last Sept. 14, she was arrested by the police
when boarding flights to Geneva to participate
in activities organized by the Human Rights Council.
Since then she’s been missing.
Prior to this, she had participated in a long-term
sit-in in front of the regime’s Foreign Ministry
to urge public consultation when the authorities
intended to draft human rights reports.
Her disappearance drew worldwide concern.
Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders Margaret
Sekaggya had commented that the arrest of Cao Shunli
and other activists “suggest there have been acts of reprisals
against people who seek to cooperate with the UN.”
EU High Representative Catherine Ashton also had issued an
emergency report regarding the case of missing of Cao Shunli.
Hu Jia, Beijing activist: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also
categorically said that they did not do anything to Cao Shunli.
But, now she’s dead, in half a year."
Cai Shunli’s health quickly deteriorated during the detention
in Beijing’s Chaoyang District Detention Center.
She developed dual tuberculosis, liver ascites,
uterine fibroids and cysts.
Her families and lawyers repeatedly applied medical
treatment for Cao Shunli, but the authorities declined.
Cao Shunli, already in a coma, was only admitted into
the hospital this Feb. 19 because the police were fearful
of the liability.
Hu Jia: “Under the watchful eyes of the international
community and the UN Human Rights Council,
she was actually killed by the CCP’s legal system.
What else will the CCP not do in broad daylight?"
Beijing activist Hu Jia hopes that the UN Human Rights
Council will observe a moment of silence in tribute
to Cao Shunlin during the meeting.
He also plans to make a statue of Cao Shunli
to be displayed at the UN Human Rights Council
because she is clearly a model who sacrificed
for the UN human rights.
After Cao Shunli’s death, the U.S. State Department
immediately issued a statement to “urge Chinese
authorities to guarantee all Chinese citizens
the protections and freedoms.”
The British government also strongly urged
the Communist regime to “release all those detained
for exercising their constitutional rights to freedom
of expression, association, and assembly.”
International human rights organizations such as Human
Rights Watch and Amnesty International have also expressed
their anger and mourning regarding Cao Shunli’s death
and condemned the CCP’s ruthless suppression
and persecution of dissidents.
Voice of America reported that many Chinese netizens
strongly urged the UN Commission on Human Rights
and the EU Human Rights Council to urge the CCP
to establish a special commission to investigate
the death of Cao Shunli.
