Behind Zhou Yongkang’s ‘Dirty Money Empire’
While the investigation of former Politics and Law Committee
(PLC) Zhou Yongkang’s case remains under wraps,
ongoing activities involving the cleaning out of the PLC
have been frequent.
Recently, media revealed two ties associated with Zhou’s
dirty money empire.
Who are they and how are they related to Zhou’s case?
The following is our analysis.
At the recent Beijing Central Political Work Conference
on Jan. 8, Xi Jinping personally conveyed the decision
to eradicate ‘black sheep’ in the PLC as part of his
anti-corruption campaign.
Hong Kong media quoted overseas sources on the 10th
who have shed some light on Zhou Yongkang’s case.
Many officials in the PLC, businessmen in the Petroleum
sector, as well as politicians in Sichuan have been placed
under investigation for their connection to Zhou
and authorities are on the heels of making arrests.
The other big piece of the Zhou puzzle is his son, Zhou Bin.
The report claimed that Zhou’s case, if announced,
will constitute the biggest political corruption case
since the Communist regime took power.
Lin Zixu, commentator: “Zhou Yongkang could be charged
with graft.
His case will involve many, from his son and his family
members to officials he’d promoted.
It will become a political purge.
Many more PLC members will be sacked."
Zhou Bin’s college roommate, Mi Xiaodong as well as
Sichuan tycoon Wu Bing are key players in the Zhou empire.
They both report to Zhou.
Mi Xiaodong managed oil trading at China National
Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
Former president of China National Petroleum Corporation
(CNPC) Jiang Jiemin, as well as general managers
of PetroChina Changqing Branch Ran Xinquan
and Wang Daofu are also involved.
Sichuan tycoon Wu Bing managed the Zhou family finances
and misappropriated tens of billions of state assets
for Zhou Bin.
Recently sacked former deputy governor of Sichuan Province,
Guo Yongxiang, had close ties to Wu Bing.
It is unclear at this point how many of Zhou’s family
affairs were managed by Wu Bing and Mi Xiaodong.
The report said once the ‘dirty money empire’ is fully
exposed, it will surely be shocking.
Li Shankam, commentator: “Zhou Yongkang’s corruption
case involves more than just himself.
Zhou Yongkang’s network affects Xi Jinping’s authority
and survival in the regime.
The central leadership is in fact very clear about it."
Commentator Li Shankam said that in addition to graft,
Zhou was directly involved in the political coup plan
and brutal bloody crimes against humanity.
Li Shankam: “I believe to some extent, the crimes will be
exposed such as the coup and the inhumane
live organ harvesting."
Commentator Lin Zixu analyses the different approaches
taken by the regime in dealing with Zhou Yongkang
and Bo Xilai.
Lin Zixu: “Although Bo’s son Bo Guagua was involved
in Bo’s case, he remains in the United States.
However, a breaking point seems to have been reached
with Zhou Yongkang’s son Zhou Bin.
Domestic media have been criticizing Zhou Bin recently,
which is extremely rare.
It looks like the Zhou family is in a precarious position.
Zhou Yongkang’s fate seems foreseeable."
Earlier, Hong Kong media had quoted a central disciplinary
official as saying the “big tiger" case will be
“announced at the appropriate time".
This appears to be a reference to none other than Zhou.
Many PLC officials have recently expressed their allegiance
to Xi Jinping and made a clean break from Zhou Yongkang.
The Third Plenary Session of the Central Commission
for Discipline is also reported to be held in January.
The official announcement of the Zhou Yongkang probe
draws nearer.
