Prologue — False News About New Express Goes Crazy On The Internet
Guangzhou based New Express recently dismissed its
director and chief editor.
A headline, “Return to work”, went wild on the
mainland internet.
The internet users commented: “Reporters and editors are
mad! Time for the press to respond.
They are shouting at the risk of being fired and detained.”
These posts, quickly removed and forwarded on,
caused widespread concern.
This post was understood to not be from the New Express, but
from the Internet user who intended to spoof the authorities.
It was mentioned that the headline is false, but the cry for
freedom of the press is real.
Hong Kong media: Beijing premeditated the
New Express incident
Hong Kong based media, Apple Daily, reported that
Guangzhou’s New Express incident, seemingly accidental,
is actually a plot of the Beijing and the Propaganda
department to crackdown on Internet and media.
It is a carefully designed movement to prohibit the private
businesses from encroaching on news media.
Changsha police takes tough stance even though facing strong
opposition from the domestic and foreign media, and concerns
from Politics and Law Committee of Guangdong Province,
China Journalists Association and the Xinhua News Agency.
It is believed that Changsha government had received
Beijing’s order to make the case big.
Guangdong Villagers Protest Against
Building A Garbage Dump
Villagers of Yentou Village in Shaoguan City, Guangdong,
opposed forceful construction of a garbage dump in the
village by local government.
On November 4, more than 600 villagers gathered at the
county hall.
They occupied the government building and cooked
in front of the building.
Local officials dispatched hundreds of police.
The violent crackdown led to serious injuries of a number
of villagers. 20 people were arrested.
Radio Free Asia reported that arrested villagers were detained
at the police station.
Dozens of villagers requested the release of the villagers
on the 5th, but were ignored.
The authorities accused the villagers of creating troubles and
disturbing the government.
They asked the villagers to sign an agreement to build the
dump as an exchange for releasing of the villagers.
