Following the detention of Xu Zhiyong,
a renowned lawyer in Beijing,
The Transition Institute (TI), a reputable NGO based
in Beijing was suddenly banned on July 18.
Analysts say this signals a growing crackdown
on civil rights movements.
BBC Chinese website reported that Guo Yushan,
TI president, has confirmed the news.
On July 18, over 20 Civil Affairs staff
broke into his office.
They announced the ban of the TI and confiscated
over 600 files of documents and office supplies.
Guo Yushan has said that they will take legal
action against this illegal behavior.
The TI’s outlawing may be related
to Xu Zhiyong’s detenion, according to Guo.
Prior to this, Guo himself was put under house arrest
for two weeks, for his involvement in Xu’s rights efforts.
The TI was founded in 2007, committed to researching
issues related to freedom and justice.
These included tax reform and citizen participation.
Guo Yushan, the TI founder, has helped out
the blind activist Chen Guangcheng.
He also participated in rights defenses supporting the tainted-
milk victims in 2008 and Deng Yujiao, who stabbed a sexual assailant official to death.
The TI has played an important role
in China’s civil rights movement.
Xu Zhiyong’s Lawyer Looses His Liberty
More suppression of rights activists occurred in China.
This ensued after lawyer Xu Zhiyong’s detention
for “disturbing public order" on July 18.
On the same day, at Beijing No. 3 Detention Center,
Xu’s lawyer Liu Weiguo was not allowed to meet Xu.
The police even interrogated Liu, who now had restricted
liberty by Shandong state security police authorities.
Reportedly, lots of lawyers have set off to
Shandong to give their support to Liu.
At the detention center, dozens of petitioners and rights
activists were also captured by police when visiting Xu Zhiyong.
Xu Zhiyong became prominent in 2003, as an advocate for
abolishing the brutal Custody & Repatriation system in China.
In recent years, Xu Zhiyong has joined in calling on public
officials to declare their assets.
He has also promoted equality in education.
Xu is considered one of China’s civil rights leaders.
