Jike to Layoff 100 Workers after 2 Billion Investment
China’s Jike search engine, managed by former Pingpong
world champion Deng Yaping, is about to lay off 100 workers.
Internet news says Deng Yaping last year received criticism
from Ma Li, deputy editor-in-chief of “People’s Daily," due to poor management of Jike.
Other sources released news Jike has cost 2 billion yuan
in past two years,
with only a ten-thousandth market share
and literally no usage.
A new version of former People Search launched by
People.com, Jike Search is known as a government instrument.
In 2010, People’s Daily launched “People Search",
domain name “goso".
One year later it changed to its new domain jike,
which translates as fast and hunger.
June 2012, a new revision of Jike highlights the
letter “i" and Chinese characters of Jike.
Deng Yaping, a retired female table tennis player,
is the winner of four Olympic gold medals & holder of Cambridge doctorate degree.
During her study at Cambridge she served in International
Olympic Committee and Beijing Olympic Committee.
Sept. 2010, Deng was appointed Deputy Secretary-
General of “People’s Daily", and CEO of People Search Internet Corporation.
Internet news on Feb. 17 says, “Without any income,
Jike is an annoyance to the leaders, who blamed Little Deng (Deng Yaping).
… As a result, the lay-off list of 100 workers
is soon to be published.”
According to People.com’s pronouncement,
People Search had a revenue of 30 million yuan, although its turnover was zero.
It is pointed out that although Jike cost 2 billion yuan
in two years, it ranks below top ten search engines,
with less than one ten thousandth of market share,
with nearly zero usage.
Former Microsoft global vice president,
and Google China president Kai-fu Lee,
said on 17th upon Twitter, “I was banned from
speaking for three days on both Sina and Tencent.”
Earlier, a banned Twitter post by Kai-fu Lee circulated online.
It is said that after questioning Deng Yaping, Lee was silenced.
Kai-fu Lee asked: 1. Why do you use taxpayers’ money for
commercial purposes? Is it not corruption to spend 2 billion in vain?
2. Is a search engine possible when the manager has no
sense of open information? Why does she not have a Twitter?
3. Why is CEO of search engine company appointed by the Party?
4. If U.S. Democratic Party appointed Phelps Google CEO,
could Google beat Yahoo?
Quoting from insiders, Nandu.com says search engine
market is close to saturation.
Even giant companies like “Baidu" are facing recession.
Recently, 360 and Sougou Search see growth
is due to their advantages in browser.
Internet news say Tencent, Soso is also facing
the fate of being eaten by Sogou.
It is unlikely that a novice like Jike takes up
much market share.
Mainland netizen Mr. Zhang:
“She (Deng Yaping) may not understand the business.
Even if she does, I don’t think her search engine
can be market-oriented.
Now sensitive information are filtered. What users need
cannot be found on it. There will certainly be no market for it.”
Dec. 2010, Deng Yaping claimed in a speech at
Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications,
that People’s Daily never published fake news reports
in its 62 years.
She was widely blamed of being too naive for this claim.
Beijing artist and independent filmmaker Yang Weidong:
“When she became CEO of People Search,
she claimed that People’s Daily never had fake news!
She is even ignorant of basic history.
When she does not understand basic conscience,
can she be a competent official?
I guess this is CCP’s principle of appointing officials—
to choose its own members and to avoid any competition.”
One hour after Kaifu Lee posted about his being silenced,
he made another Twitter post entitled “Xi Jinping: CCP Should Be Able to Take Sharp Criticism.”
Lee’s post cites Xi’s words that CCP should accommodate sharp
criticism, so that they can correct and prevent what is wrong;
And that non-party people should have the courage to speak
the truth that reflects people’s voices without any reserve.
When Deng Yaping was once asked whether the
‘People Search’ engine work for people or for CCP?
Deng quickly changed the subject without providing an answer.
