‘King of Comedy’Joins China’s Politics: Entertainment
Stephen Chow (Chow Sing-chi) is a famous
Hong Kong actor and comedian.
Now he became a member of Guangdong’s Chinese People
Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) committee.
Shall this be categorized as political news,
or entertainment news?
The news itself is political. Yet, it is featured in many
China’s websites’entertainment sections, as Chow is often called the’King of Comedy’among Chinese people.
In addition, the news also becomes a recent hot topic
on Chinese microblogs’sites.
On January 14th, Guangdong’s provincial CPPCC committee
(CPPCCC) new members’names were released.
Stephen Chow, a very famous Hong Kong actor
and comedian, has been added to the list.
The official record shows, Chow is one of the 93 provincial
CPPCCC members, part of the subsector Hong Kong SAR.
Chow also joined the group of “star members in Guangdong’
CPPCCC,"which includes celebrities such as Kent Tong (Tong Chun-yip), Ma Dingsheng and Wu Xiaoli.
Why was Chow invited to join the CPPCC committee?
The Guangdong’News Express Daily cited a provincial
CPPCC staff that it should be Guangdong’s United Front Work department that made the move.
Another staff remarked that, Chow’s presence will attract
more media and social attention on the provincial plenary sessions of CPPCC in the next 5 years.
However, there are worries that Chow’s well-know image
from his Mo-lei-tau humor style does not fit well with the position of CPPCCC member.
Zhu Xinxin (former editor, Hebei official radio station): Many
CPPCCCs members are there for “the sake of appearance."
The basic job for a CPPCCC member is to take part
in political issues.
Any celebrity or star should not become a member
just because he/she is famous.
Above all he/she has to possess the capability
and the passion for politics."
Lan Shu (political commentator): The Chinese Communist
Party'(CCP) leadership group has strengthened
the Unite Front Work toward Hong Kong and Macao
since Xi Jinping came to power.
On the other hand, we can see that some famous people
from Hong Kong, Macao or abroad may still cherish illusions
on the CCP that they will carry out a political reform
in the future."
Lan Shu remarked that for those celebrities outside China
who made achievements by their own talents and efforts,
there is no need to be involved with a party
that will soon become a history.
Lan Shu: “No matter how Xi Jinping hopes to implement
a political reform, it is simply impossible to change the CCP’s whole regime.
As now nobody believes in communism, the core posts
are occupied by different interest groups inside the CCP.
To overturn such a situation is completely
beyond Xi’s abilities."
Stephen Chow’joining the CPPCCC is striking news
also because his roles directly or indirectly ridicule the CCP.
For example, in “Tricky Brains"(1991) Chow’s character
ironically criticizes the suppression during the June Fourth Incident after having a “bean bun that makes you lie."
In"Kung Fu Hustle"(2004), the “Axe Gang"is widely
believed to be a metaphor for the CCP.
The villain in the film,"Evil Deity of the Fiery Cloud,"
looks quite similar to Jiang Zemin in spirit, who is often called “toad” by Chinese civilians.
The scene of “Buddhist Palm Beating the Toad" at the end
of the movie makes many Chinese feel"avenged."
Lan Shu: “You will become more famous
if you criticize the CCP more.
Then the CCP will spend more time and money on you
as part of their “United Front Work."
So here are the two sides of the coin. If the CCP successfully
wins your support, it benefits much more as you can influence a lot of people."
Despite Chow’s Mo-lei-tau humor style,
his movies allude to current affairs at times.
Many Chinese netizens cite conversations from Chow’s
movies to make fun of the news that he joined the CPPCCC.
Some of them even use them to speculate
what Chow’s first proposal will be about.
The Southern Weekly website, nandu.com, presented
eight possible answers related to Chow’s previous movies.
1. The urgency and necessity for the officials
to declare their properties; (Hail the Judge, 1994)
2. Protecting intellectual property rights and encouraging
independent development; (Forbidden City Cop, 1996)
3. The urban compulsory educational system should
cover children of migrant workers; (CJ7, 2008)
4. Providing venture funds to young talents;
(King of Comedy, 1999)
5. Improving China’s soccer by popularizing
Chinese Kung Fu; (Shaolin Soccer, 2001)
6. Developing the lottery industry
as a steady advancing step; (The Tricky Master, 2000)
7. Any retrial must abide by the law;
(Justice, My Foot!, 1992)
8. Strengthening protection over housing property
and banning illegal demolition. (The Lucky Guy, 1998)
The Chinese media had hyped up many"star-members
of CPPCCC"these years, such as Gong Li and Liu Xiang.
However, besides all the gossips and tidbits around them,
at the Two Meetings none of them had valuable political suggestions.
Thus it is not surprising to see “Chow becoming a CPPCCC
member" being categorized as entertainment news by the Chinese media.
Some people noticed that the Guangdong’CPPCCC list has
the name “Zhang Guorong" – same as that of the deceased Hong Kong star, Leslie Cheung (Cheung Kwok-wing.)
Such mysterious coincidence has brought
more amusement to the Chinese netizens.
