China Under Hazardous Fog Without Adequate Warnings
Recently, nearly 20 of the 22 provinces in China
have experienced days of fog and haze weather.
On January 14, the Central Meteorological Observatory
issued a warning that the haze will continue to January 16.
This heavy fog caused by air pollution
has seriously affected people’shealth.
Currently, in Beijing alone nearly 100,000 children have
sought hospital treatment, with up to 30% respiratory issues.
Nearly 20 provinces in eastern and central China
have experienced extremely heavy fog for a week now.
This so-called “fog" constitutes of countless particles
that can enter into the lungs.
With 2.5 micrometers (pm2.5) or less in diameter,
the particles can carry many toxic and hazardous substances,
and can enter directly into the lungs and the blood stream,
causing extreme harm to human health.
Per Beijing Environmental Protection Monitoring Center,
on January 12, pm2.5 in the air was up to 993 micrograms per cubic meter, seven times higher the international standard.
Zhou Rong (Chairman, Beijing Climate, Energy And
Environmental Protection): “The level has climbed up very high and has brought such a result.
It is harmful to all people once the level is above 500.
People should try to stay indoors and do not go out.”
Beijing’s air index is 428, or level 6 of serious pollution.
Zhou Rong: “In general, once the pollution index reaches
150 to 200, it harms the health of sensitive people, such as the elderly and children.
Appropriate protective measures should be taken.
Thus, if the pollution is serious, one should not go out and
should protect themselves. Level 3 or 4 are already serious."
Such serious pollutions cause great harm to the human body.
However, Beijing residents still live as usual,
as if they have got used to these conditions.
The only inconvenience they felt is the low visibility.
They do not consider more harm, in terms of physical health.
The authorities also have not issued warnings in this regard.
If not for the nationwide fog and haze, a lot of people do not know what pm2.5 is.
Only after the weather has drawn the attention of the WHO
and foreign media, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) advised people to not go out and do intense exercises.
It still did not tell people about the actual hazards
and protective measures of the weather pollution.
On December 18, 2012, Greenpeace and Beijing University’
School of Public Health jointly published a report.
It showed that 7,770 premature deaths were caused by
pm2.5 pollution in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xian.
The report pointed out that if air quality in the four cities
does not improve in 2012,
the “premature deaths" due to pm2.5 pollution will reach
8,572, and there will be 6.8 billion yuan economic losses.
Currently, the scope of the air pollution is expanding.
China’sCentral Meteorological Station forecasted on Jan. 13,
that the haze is spreading to the southern part of North China,
south of the Yangtze River, and regions around the
Yellow River and the Huai River, affecting dozens of cities.
China’sofficial media also reported, of the country’s 74 cities
with air monitoring systems, 33 cities have serious pollution.
The harm to human body caused by this kind
of weather pollution is gradually coming out.
The number of people visiting hospitals in the fog covered
areas increased sharply, most of them with respiratory issues.
People have to wear protective masks to go out.
Some experts pointed out that China’sso-called
“economic development" that accelerates urbanization,
and its reckless destruction of nature have resulted in
permanent energy consumption and pollution beyond repair.
The most frightening aspect is CCP’sauthorities’ negligence,
which deteriorates the degree of pollution each year.
The pollution has started
to endanger people’sphysical health.
According to a World Health Organization’s report,
China accounts for 16 of the world’s 20 most polluted cities.
Official data shows that up to 358,000 deaths
are due to air pollution each year.
China’s air, water and soil have been seriously polluted,
and are affecting every Chinese person.
The CCP authorities still conceal the status of the pollution,
and its harm to the human body.
As a result, Chinese people are not aware
that they are approaching a serious danger.
