Propaganda Department Holds Stern Position
on Southern Weekly Incident
The message that “Southern Weekly’s" New Year special
issue was tampered with has triggered endless disputes.
Hundreds of people went to to the headquarters of the
Southern Newspaper Group with flowers to show their support.
The Central Propaganda Department of the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) issued a notice firmly supporting Tuo Zheng, the Propaganda Department Minister.
“Radio France Internationale” reported the CCP Central
Propaganda Department confirmed three things about the incident.
1.The CCP’s media is unshakable.
2. The Southern Weekly incident has nothing to do with Tuo Zheng.
3. There were hostile forces from outsides trying to interfere.
The report said the Central Propaganda Department stopped
the media people speaking in support of the protest.
It also urged all media to post a review in the
Global Times on January 8th.
It seems to set off a wave of exposing and criticizing the
Southern Weekly.
“Southern Weekly" Employees Are
Pessimistic about the Future
The BBC report said, the Central Propaganda Department
gave a qualitative assessment of the Southern Weekly incident.
The staff of Southern Weekly are too desperate to believe
there is any chance for the Southern Weekly to survive.
The report quoted sources as saying, “Southern Weekly
newspaper would probably continue to exist.
However it would most likely turn into the Party’s newspaper,
with all the good stuff lost.
At the same time, the sources also worried about the internal
staff being cleansed within the “Southern Weekly.”
Southern Weekly Incident Points to
the Future of China’s Media
The unfolding of the “Southern Weekly Incident"
recently also has caught global mainstream media attention.
The British Times Newspaper pointed out that,
in the past few weeks,
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) monitoring behavior
showed it is more sensitive than in the past to outside criticism.
The “Daily Telegraph” quoted David Bandurskit, researcher of
the China Media Research Program, University of Hong Kong,
He said said the Southern Weekly incident creates serious
doubt about China under the leadership of Xi Jinping.
David believes that it was not about media coverage,
but it is more about the future direction of China.
Looking at many events, he thinks that China is a step
backwards rather than forward.
Is Stopping Reeducation through Labor Camps
Actually a New Political System?
According to many Mainland media reports,
Meng Jianzhu secretary of the Politics and Law Committee
of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) announced on Jan. 7th that
the CCP will stop using the reeducation through labor system.
While some people have cheered for the abolition of the evil
law, Mainland legal experts have expressed cautious optimism.
According to the Deutsche Welle reports,
well-known legal scholar Teng Biao pointed out that
key information from Meng Jianzhu showed that the
CCP would stop the use of reeducation through labor system, but not elimination of it.
Teng Biao believes that even if reeducation through
labor system now stops, it is not a well-intentioned reform signal released by the rulers.
It is only a reaction to the continuous protests from the victims,
calls from law scholars and lawyers, and public pressure.
Teng Biao said that if re-education through labor laws were
completely eliminated, the CCP’s extrajudicial laws still exist.
The CCP still has black jails, residential surveillance,
house arrest,
forced transportation to a mental clinic or rescue shelter,
forced disappearances, and brainwashing classes,
which all make up for the functions of a labor camp.
All these methods and places are ready for people
who are in the forced labor camps right now.
