Liu Xiang has no choice
Liu Xiang fell on the track of the 110-meter hurdles,
which has provoked much discussion inside China.
Supporters said the injury is a force majeure,
while critics doubt it was just a show.
He might be there just for his sponsors,
because he knew clearly that he can’t make it.
His coach said that his participation is an obligation.
Sina.com posted an article from XiaoXiang Morning,
saying that Liu fell again like 4 years ago,
which raised a big question: If he was seriously injured,
why bother starting from the starting blocks?
At the news conference after the game, the deputy director
of Track and Field Management Center, Feng Shuyong said
Liu has been holding an injury and has not fully recovered,
like some media reported.
Then what makes Liu start from the starting blocks
resulting in snapping his achilles tendon?
Wang Chao from Tianjin Tracks and Field team said
the system is to be blamed.
Wang Chao, Athlete from Tianjin Tracks and Field Team:
“The Chinese Regime use sports to burnish their public image.
So they need the athletes to be their decorations.
They won’t let you know what’s behind the scene.
They never care about human nature. All they want
is to show that their judgment is good in some aspects."
After Liu’s fall, some Chinese journalists said on their
micro-blogs that the media knew in advance that Liu would quit the race.
Some netizens said, provincial propaganda departments
have instructed that:
regarding Liu’s failure, you shall strictly follow
the previous instructions,
focusing the coverage on Liu’s persistence,
don’t criticize or comment negatively.
At the same time, reports from Xinhua news agency
proclaimed him to be the greatest athlete, saying his story will become an Olympic legend.
Mainland Chinese athlete, Yang Zhong said that
in order to polish their image with athletes’achievement,
local authorities played many dirty tricks.
Mainland Chinese Basketball Player Yang Zhong:
“I am a professional athlete. I know about many hidden secrets.
My age was changed. It was first changed to be older,
then changed again to be younger.
They did this in order to get most out of the competitions
so that they can make use of the athlete’s achievements.
They even bribe referees, and use political means."
Besides Political factors, many netizens doubt that it is the
“interest chain" behind the manipulating of Liu.
Liu has 17 sponsors and numerous ads’ contracts, with all
the income belonging to the General Administration of Sport.
Wang Chao: “He has become a commercial product.
Whatever he did would affect the authority’s income,
so for the sake of money,
everything can be forged."
Sina.com quoted from a well-known journalist’s micro-blog
said, before the 2008 Olympics,
Liu was kept so busy with numerous commercial activities
that he was very far away from competing for gold.
However, his team refused to lower the charge for
representing a sports supplies brand name.
His team has a strong government and media relationship,
and all of his belongs to the national sports authority.
So the sponsor requested that Liu quit the race using the
excuse of injury so that Liu might not lose face and
the sponsor’s brand image wouldn’t be damaged,
instead it might even be enhanced.
The report said that if this is true, then Liu’s injury and
hospitalization for all these years has been a mere lie.
