Tibet’s Situation Continues to Deteriorate

So far, over 30 Tibetans had conducted self-immolation,
with the most recent incident happening last week.
Every incident is followed by more severe suppression
and control by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
So far this year, eight protestors in Tibet
have been shot death.
A few days ago, 17 Qinghai Gangcha’ teachers and students
were arrested and sentenced for involvement in protests.
The unrests in Tibet seem to have expanded. Tibetans urge
the international community for more attention on Tibet.

From January to March this year, 20 incidents of monks’
self-immolation protests happened in Tibet.
Statistics show so far that more than 30 Tibetans
have conducted self-immolation.
Meanwhile, Tibetans’ protests have extended
to other areas than those with temples.

Last Friday, two monks from Caodeng Temple
in Aba County, Sichuan Province, set themselves on fire.
This occurred at Markang County government compound,
causing confrontations between Tibetans and police.
A few days ago, 17 Qinghai Gangcha’teachers and students
were arrested and sentenced for involvement in protests.

Radio Free Asia reported that Ethnic Middle School principal,
who participated in the protest was dismissed.
Three students were sentenced to 3 years in prison,
five were dismissed and about eight are under investigation.

Dawa Tsering, Head of India’s Tibet Religious Foundation
Of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, spoke on the issue.
He said any demands from Tibetans, like speaking Tibetan,
or not intervening in their religion are labeled as crimes.
People are charged, arrested or “disappear,"
and some may even be fired at by the army.

Dawa Tsering: “The CCP does not care about Tibetans.
They do not care about even 300 deaths, let alone 30.
The CCP treats people like ants.
They do not have respect for life in their culture."

Accordingly, Tibetans’self-immolation protests have spread
from the agricultural and pastoral areas to schools.
Almost people from each class are involved in this.

However, the CCP authorities do not reflect on their policies,
but consistently strengthen the control.

Dawa Tsering: “CCP never admits its mistakes. It blames
the Dalai Lama or the international “anti-China" groups.
They always find an enemy to blame.
To them, all these are caused by others, not themselves."

Kunga Tashi, is a Tibetan analyst and
Dalai Lama’s representative to the U.S.
Kunga Tashi said that the international community
expresses concerns over the situation in Tibet.
It has always paid attention to the situation
that continues to deteriorate.

Kunga Tashi: “Regarding the international society’s opinions,
although we don’t see CCP reacting, it is very worried about the Tibetan issue.
The image of the Chinese government is greatly damaged
in the international arena because of the issue of Tibet.
So it has to consider these opinions."

On April 3, 12 Nobel Peace Prize winners including
Desmond Tutu sent a letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao.
The letter urged Hu to “respect the dignity of Tibetan people"
and open meaningful dialogue with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders.

Lobsang Sangay is in charge of the Tibetan government
in exile, and thinks self-immolation incidents will continue.
He said, Tibetans sacrifice their lives so the world can hear
them and understand the sufferings of the Tibetans.
Lobsang Sangay also expressed during a press conference
in Japan that the CCP authorities should take responsibility to resolve the self-immolation issue.
