Bo Could Hardly Conceal His Worries with a Non Response to Harper’s Joke

On Feb 11th, Bo Xilai returned from Yunnan Province and met Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Chongqing. This is his first time showing face in the international media since Wang Lijun went to the U.S. Consulate to seek asylum. Wang Lijun is Bo’s anti-corruption aid and the Vice Mayor of Chongqing City. International media describe Bo Xilai as pretending to be easygoing in the meeting with Harper. However, when he gave no response to Harper’s joke, his
anxiety was disclosed. It was said that the Chinese regime is currently attempting to calm Bo Xilai down, which is the only reason Bo was still able to meet Harper in the midst of such a complicated situation.

Harper first visited Cuntan Harbor after he arrived in Chongqing, then he visited the Chongqing Zoo. Harper then attended the signing ceremony of 2 pandas.

Chongqing vice Mayor Wu Gang accompanied Harper throughout the entire process.

At 6pm, Harper met Bo Xilai in the small auditorium of the Chongqing Municipal for a one-hour talk.

Politics Commentator Hu Ping thinks that it’s the “loose outside while tight inside” approach used by the Chinese Regime authority. The Chinese regime is worried that they may cause a big political earthquake if they penalize Bo Xilai right now. It also might have an influence on Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S.

Wang Juntao, a pro-democracy activist, attended the Tiananmen Square event in 1989. He also thinks the Chinese regime pretended to play it cool by arranging Bo Xilai to meet Harper at this time.

Wang Juntao, “I think the Chinese regime doesn’t want to bring about too big a political repercussion. On one side, Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao would like to crack down on Bo Xilai; on the other hand they want to maintain a stable political environment. In order to maintain a stable political situation, they decided to arrange the Bo Xilai/Harper meeting to appear normal.”

During Bo’s meeting with Harper, the Chinese authorities seemed very nervous.
There were a large number of police on the scene.

Only 3 out of more than 30 Canadian media were permitted into the meeting room, and only 5 Chinese regime media were allowed in.

Foreign media said the rules were very strict regarding interviews and reports.
TV reporters were blocked from entering the meeting room. Bo Xilai didn’t shake hands or take pictures with Harper in front of media.

Xinhua only publicized the news that Bo Xilai met Harper in Chongqing six hours after the meeting. The subject of the news was “Canadian Prime Minister Harper Visited Chongqing,” without any mention of Bo Xilai. ‘Chongqing Daily’ is the newspaper owned by Chongqing Municipal authorities. When it reported the news, it copied word for word the article from Xinhua Agency without including a picture of Bo Xilai.

Contrastingly, for the news about Harper meeting Guangdong Provincial Communist Party Secretary Wang Yang, all media published the picture of Harper and Wang Yang shaking hands.

“Apple Daily” in Hong Kong described Bo Xilai as pretending to be easy going when meeting Harper, but hardly being able to conceal his anxiety.

Reporters from ‘The Canadian Press’ pointed out that both Bo Xilai and Harper avoided the topic of Wang Lijun. In the meeting, Harper attempted to inject some levity by saying, “more people in Canada will notice the pandas than anything else.” But Bo Xilai didn’t respond to his joke at all.

The Hubei dissident writer, Du Daobin, thinks Bo is now in the center of a storm. Bo’s political life has been threatened and he can’t help but worry.

Du Daobin: “Somebody under him (Bo Xilai) created such big trouble. Wang Lijun went to the U.S. Consulate. This is not something good. It’s actually a very sensational political scandal. It’s normal that Bo tried to avoid talking about it. Another possibility is that he doesn’t know how to talk about it. What happened to Wang Lijun? What did Wang Lijun talk about in the U.S. Consulate?
What did Wang Lijun discuss after he got to Beijing? Bo Xilai must have no idea about all of these questions.”

Hu Ping also said that The 18th National People’s Congress is approaching.
It’s just these couple of months that the name list of the standing committee will be decided. He said that Bo has been severely attacked, and at the least,
It will be hopeless for him to get into the Standing Committee.
