Sanya: A Rip-Off Island Paradise for China’s Officials
Masses of Chinese people went to spend holidays in Sanya,
Hainan province during the Chinese New Year.
However, the resort was found no longer found to be a place
that “welcomes" civilian tourists.
Nowadays Sanya is known as a paradise for swarms of
powerful CCP officials.
The lavish official spending there triggers rampant extortion
and overpricing locally, scaring away ordinary tourists.
China’s media recently revealed an astronomical priced bill.
A tourist ordered nine dishes at a seafood restaurant in Sanya.
The billing was nearly RMB 10,000 after 30% off.
On Jan. 28th, Luo Di’s micro-blog posting said he “got ripped
off RMB 4,000 for three basic seafood dishes” in Sanya.
On Feb. 3rd, a netizen posted a billing online, showing that
even ordinary vegetables are also over-charged.
On the bill, an order of minced green beans was listed as RMB
87, hot and sour potatoes charged at RMB 57.
The bills sparked heated public discussion. Chinese netizens
see that Sanya has become an international rip-off island.
How about the accommodation prices in Sanya then?
A local quasi-five-star hotel staff member says a double room
is listed RMB 588. At Chinese New Year its price RMB 2,880.
Hotel staff from Sanya: “Here in Sanya, the hotel room rate
soars several fold in the period of Chinese New Year.
The room rate around Yalong Bay is about RMB 8,000-9,000
per night.
The intracity hotels charge RMB 2,000-3,000 or up to RMB
4,000per night."
Zhang Jian, former president of Jianke Electronics,
recalls his Sanya visit many years ago.
At that time, Sanya locals impressed him with simple and
honest behaviors.
Yet nowadays Sanya sees such exaggerated rip-offs so
Zhang Jian analyzed the reasons behind it.
Zhang Jian: “One is lack of supervision locally.
Unscrupulous traders’ immorality is another factor.
But the biggest reason is public-funds spending,
which fuels the local rip-off behavior.
Those officials don’t care about being ripped-off at all.
They don’t spend their own money, but from the taxpayers."
China Business reveals Sanya Airport’s data records. VIP
channel had 400+ high-level officials at Chinese New Year.
While those officials of lower status who usually go through
the VIP channel had to pass through the normal channels.
Sanya Tourism Bureau statistics show that Sanya received
a total of 0.49 million visitors at the 2012 Chinese New Year.
The tourism revenue reached 3.32 billion RMB, 70%-plus
increase over 2011.
The reports said senior officials were accompanied by
masses of businessmen and entertainers.
Every day, they enjoyed the sky of blue and sea of green,
spending public funds on beer and skittles.
A meal costing RMB 20,000-30,000 is commonplace. Sanya
thus quickly became a paradise for the powerful officials
It was an arena for business-official social relationships.
One hotel staff revealed that a Beijing businessman held
a Sanya vacation for some officials and businessmen.
The cost of reception was as high as 3 million RMB.
Zhang Jian says the public-funds spending generates into a
rampant rip-off, it further triggers China’s moral decay.
One-party dictatorship enables CCP corrupt officials to enjoy
various privileges, creating a variety of social problems.
Zhang Jian: “It’s the CCP’s very evil system that produces
these acts.
They’re just like a cancerous disease, the root cause derives
from a poisonous tumor."
On February 2nd, a tourist had a dispute with a hotel security
about parking, but was beaten and injured.
The tourist’s daughter told the media. The local police cursed
her family, “Go to hell!”, after speaking with the hotel manager.
Facing the onlookers ‘accusations, the police continued to
cursing without stopping.
