New CCTV Director Mocked By Netizens
The new Director of China Central Television (CCTV),
Hu Zhanfan, took his position less than two weeks ago.
His remarks trigger intense online debates. Netizens comment
on his ‘mouthpiece’ type of words: “Journalists should be the party’s propaganda workers."
Some netizens said: “Hu’s comments are like mantis trying
to stop cars – this can’t halt the historic press freedom’ trend."
One of Hu’s quotations was forwarded 10,000 times
within one day on the Sina micro logs.
Hu said: “Some journalists do not position themselves
as the party’s propaganda workers but as news professionals, which is a fundamental mistake.
Another one is: “Some people think, emphasizing the role
of the party spirit and the mouthpiece voice will affect the objectivity of news reporting and press laws…
This is very wrong, and very one-sided."
Netizens interpret his words as clearly telling people, CCTV
is not about news, but specifically engages in propaganda.
Netizens also suggested GAPP to recover CCTV employees’
reporter ID, and issue them with publicity work permits.
Gao Yu, a former China News Agency correspondent,
and a senior media person, spoke with NTD about this.
Gao said, Hu’s words show how when someone is promoted,
the Central Propaganda Dept. demands them to be a party tool.
Gao Yu: “This is how the Central Propaganda Department
teaches and demands from people in charge to be like.
The selection criteria is, who can serve me as a tool,
who can say ‘Our media serves the party’, he’ll be promoted."
Jiao Guobiao, former Associate Professor of Journalism School
at Peking University, said Hu’s comments reflect the status quo of the Chinese media.
Jiao Guobiao: “After Hu took the position of CCTV Director,
people expose his words, as they maybe disagree with them.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with his decision. In fact,
the public is calling for objective, neutral, and diverse media."
Netizen ‘Wang Sixiang’ launched a microblogging initiative
for imitating Hu’s quotations. He got many such punch lines.
For example: “There are some Guo Meimeis who don’t focus
on the Red Cross’whitewashing, but on showing off their wealth, and this is a fundamental error in positioning."
And “Some audiences do not position themselves on receiving
propaganda, but on watching it, which is a fundamental error in positioning."
Writer Tie Liu pointed out that China’s media is the
mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Unlike the Western news media
which are ‘the eyes of the society.’
Hu’s words are actually similar to Mao Zedong’s
“literature and art should serve politics".
Tie Liu: “News must reflect society and reality. What is news?
News is truth. The truth in the news gives them vitality.
No matter whether CCP is the ruling party or not, it just has
70 million members, a very small part of the 1.3 billion people.
If the news speak to 70 million members, instead
of the 1.3 billion people, it is untrue, one-sided and false."
Gao Yu also said in mainland China under the one-party rule,
only one media existed, that is, the CCP media.
It is impossible to have independent and objective media.
Only if the political system changes, will there be a variety of independent media.
Hu Zhanfan, 58, graduated from the Journalism Department
of the Beijing Broadcasting Institute.
As Editor-in-Chief of Guangming Daily, he published
numerous articles, criticizing reforms of the political system.
