Girls from prestigious Beijing universities are becoming hot commodities for an underground fertility trade. Brokering agencies are sourcing eggs from young women for thousands of dollars despite laws against the practice.
In this picture taken by Beijing News in October, a broker interviews a group of potential egg donors at a hotel lobby. A couple watches nearby to pick out whose egg they want for their would-be baby. The girls, like many others involved in this black market trade, are all college students. Their level of education and looks will determine for how much their eggs will sell.
[Fertility Broker]:
“We need to find out the egg donor’s details – their height, blood type, weight and age. We want girls who are at least five feet and three inches tall, between 20 to 26 years old.”
A 22-year-old student from Tsinghua or Peking University – two of China’s top schools – can get more than 45 hundred dollars for her eggs, according to state-run Global Times. They don’t keep all the money though; the brokers take a big cut to pay for medical exams and as commission.
Donating eggs is a potential dangerous procedure. The donor must take hormone-boosting drugs before undergoing an invasive surgery. Beijing lawyer Liu Wei says these girls are not adequately warned.
[Liu Wei, Beijing Lawyer]:
“I’m most worried about the damage this does to the girls’ bodies. Brokers involved in this illegal trade need to explain the potential dangers of the drugs to the girls, otherwise they should be held responsible for any harm done.”
Chinese authorities banned egg trading in 2006, but there are no effective enforcement measures. The Beijing News reports hundreds of companies are involved in egg trading. And because the practice is illegal, most offer no contractual protection for donors.
