Corrupt Officials Idenntified By Their Watches,
Railway minister wears $62,666 watch
Luxury watches have recently become another way
to expose corrupt Communist Chinese Party (CCP) officials.
A weibo.com user collects photos of officials in public settings
and identifies their watches.
He finds that luxury watches are all over the place.
Sheng Guangzu, the CCP chief and railway minister,
was found to own an assortment of expensive watches,
including a 400,000 yuan (US$62,666) watch.
Thus, some officials have asked that the brand name
of their watches not be exposed.
The website, “Huaguoshan general secretary” was created to
identify high-end brand name watches and is maintained
by a CEO of a joint venture company in China.
Since childhood, he has always been interested in watches
and can easily identify luxury watches.
He has come across many luxury watches
since he became involved in politics and business.
Eventually, he became a professional luxury watch dealer.
Many netizens praise him saying that he is a mixture
of Sherlock Holmes and the little boy in the short tale,
The Emperor’s New Clothes.
The Hong Kong newspaper, MingPao, reported that
Huaguoshan general secretary introduced the idea of
identifying official’s watch after the fatal Wenzhou train crash
on July 23, when Huaguoshan accidentally realized
that the Minister of Railways, Sheng Guangzu was wearing
a Rolex valued at more than 70,000 yuan (US$10,964).
After searching other online public photos of Sheng Guangzu ,
Huaguoshan was really surprised.
Sheng Guangzu was photographed wearing an assortment
of watches on different occasions, including a Piaget,
Glashütte, Omega Constellation, and so on.
Huaguoshan said that it clearly identifed four of
Sheng Guangzu’s watches with a combined value of
more than 400,000 yuan (US$62,666).
Du Daobin, a dissident writer from Hubei: “Once you wear
a particular brand of watch, everyone will know that you are a corrupt official.
It is like the official is openly admitting that he is corrupt.
However, they are vain, thus they lack self-confidence,
unlike U.S. officials, Gary Locke, ambassador to China
and Joe Biden, vice president. They lack these qualities.”
In the past two months, Huaguoshan has identified more than
a few dozen luxury watches worn by Chinese officials.
The most expensive watch he’s found so far was an Omega
watch decorated with diamonds and worn by a finance minister in east China.
He estimates that the watch cost
at least 200,000 yuan (US$ 31,328).
The next most expensive watch was a Rolex gold watch worn
by a tax official in Hunan, valued at 170,000 yuan (US$26,629).
In addition, Vice Minister of Railways, Lu Dongfu,
Deputy Health Minister, Yin Li, and Vice Minister,
Zhang Laiwu, as well as other officials,
are also on Huaguoshan’s list, sporting watches
that cost at least 40,000 yuan (US$ 6,265) each.
Huaguoshan reveals that one director was wearing
a 700,000 yuan (US$109,649 ) Patek Philippe!
Independent Chinese PEN Center member, Liu Yiming:
“This is very normal in China. There are a lot of corrupt officials.
They are very rich, and also fond of enjoying name brand stuff.
They like to show off and wear these items to advertise their status."
Huaguoshan said that unless its absolutely sure,
it will normally state, “suspected of being a certain brand name.”
The site hopes that with careful comparison,
each of its conclusions will prove to be true.
Among all of the watches that Huaguoshan has identified so far,
only one official from a county’s Administration of Taxation responded to him directly.
Huaguoshan identified this official’s Omega Constellation
which cost at least 49,900 yuan (US$7,832).
This taxation official claimed that the Omega watch was obtained
in a duty-free shop in France and cost 23,000 yuan (US$3,602).
He said he paid 6,000 yuan (US$939) less than
he would have paid in China.
He claimed that he earned a decent income,
thus he purchaed the watch.
However, not everyone bought into his story, with some saying
that it is suspicious that an official with a salary
of only few thousand yuan per month
would own a luxury watch like this.
Some officials asked Huaguoshan not to expose their watches,
but the website chose not to listen to them.
However, some messages involving a select few high-level
officials with expensive watches, were immediately deleted
after Huaguoshan exposed them.
Huaguoshan said that the name brand of an official’s watch
has often become the most critical clue in fighting corruption.
Although Huaguoshan expects to run into many
ongoing obstacles, it said will continue its efforts.
