“Backbone Award": Farce or Scam?
Recently, TV host Ni Ping won
the so-called “Backbone of Republic" Award,
which has led to ridicules and condemnation by
Chinese netizens.
Well-known writer Li Chengpeng said satirically that
Ni Ping was “a spine with cervical spondylosis."
Later netizens revealed that
it cost RMB 9,800 to buy such an award.
Therefore, they questioned that
Ni Ping had paid for her award.
Chinese media revealed that
this award was just a farce and scam.
On July 10, “Backbone of the Republic" award ceremony
took place in Beijing’s National Convention Centre.
More than 300 celebrities, including TV hostess Ni Ping,
film star Tian Hua, director Zhang Jigang,
Chinese Ballad Singers Association President Liu Lanfang,
received various titles, such as “Backbone of the Republic”.
Netizens discovered that most winners were artists.
So they questioned the award criteria,
assessment panel composition and award procedures.
Netizens questioned Ni Ping,
a CCP’s National Committee member,
who only votes in favor of the CCP,
is not worth the “backbone" title.
Li Chengeng joked on microblog that,
“Ni Ping is really the backbone of the republic,
only that she’s got cervical spondylosis."
Soon Ni responded to Li’s criticism by saying that
she was not entitled to receive the award,
and she asked for Li’s understanding.
Li posted another blog saying that
Ni’s reply appearing to be modest, kind and warm,
but in fact it had “CCP Spring Festival’s hypocrisy “.
He said, “If a people’s delegate does not speak for the people,
even if she were a backbone,
she would be a backbone with cervical spondylosis.
She is not righteous or honest."
Blog author Qiao Zhifeng published an article entitled,
“Is the Ni Ping that only votes yes a Republican Backbone?"
It said: “I remember, Ni Ping, a CPP’s meeting participant
said proudly in an interview that
“I only vote yes. Because I love China; I am not a trouble maker.
I never vote against (the CCP) or abstain from voting."
If a person only votes in favor (of the ruling CCP),
then no matter what high-sounding reasons she has,
she cannot be forgiven.
Even if her behavior cannot be called “kissing up" or
“having rickets", at least she lacks responsibility,
so she does not deserve to be called
“the backbone of the republic."
On July 15, a netizen named Liu Xianming said,
he received an invitation
to join one “Outstanding Chinese People"
award ceremony in May 2011.
However, the precondition was
to pay RMB 9800 to participate.
Liu said “there is a suspicion of buying awards",
so he ignored this invitation.
He also questioned the so-called “backbone of China" award
mentioned by the invitation was the one received by Ni Ping.
This activity was initiated by
“China Economic Newspaper Association.”
It’s said that host organization’s official website
was later shut down, as “the site was not registered”.
Tencent published
an article “Ni Ping’s Backbone Award is a Scam".
It said that after careful investigation, they confirm that
the “backbone of the republic award" is a farce and fraud.
The organizer of the award activity is Liu Xuewen,
the Secretary General of the award committee,
vice president of China’s Economic Newspaper and
the editor-in-chief of the Chinese magazine Influential People.
Tencent’s the report said, in 2001,
without funding or connections,
Liu organized an essay competition called
“Backbone of the Republic".
The activity was highly praised by People’s Daily,
who called it a gift dedicated to the 80th anniversary
of the CCP from the literary field.
This event raised Liu in status.
He started his “award industry’ through affiliation, bribery,
fund raising and celebrity effects to attract clients.
He has operated this system
for over ten years.
The report also analyzed that the reason for the “Backbone
Award” revelation was because that this blatant award,
combined with Ni Ping’s “celebrity effect",
has attracted too many eyeballs.
Also Li Chengpeng’s microblog posts also played a role
in fueling the public concern of the event.
