Jiang Zemin’s Death a Mystery
The English Xinhua News report on July 7 denied rumors of
Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Jiang Zemin’s death,
but overseas media and analysts questioned the report.
Hong Kong’s ATV reported Jiang’s death on July 6,
but the CCP did not openly deny the rumor until a day later.
This has already affected CCP fractions’ internal struggles.
Meanwhile, the general public has been intensely discussing
and celebrating Jiang’s death.
They also hope to publicly try Jiang.
After Xinhua denied the rumor, Japan’s Sankei Shimbun
published a headline titled “Jiang Zemin is dead.”
The report said “a source involved in Japan-China relations
said Jiang died in the evening of July 6.
Various high-ranking CCP politicians came to visit the heavily
guarded 301 Hospital in Beijing, where his body is kept.
After Xinhua denied the rumors, ATV apologized on July 7.
However, ATV’s major investor Wang Zheng denied
having prior knowledge of the report on Jiang’s death.
Hong Kong’s Ming Pao reported on July 8 that
the source of the news is closely related to Wang Zheng.
Hong Kong Shue Yan University’s dean of Journalism and
Communication Leung Tin Wai said,
“Usually such info is reported only with official confirmation,
unless it’s from Wang Zheng. I heard he is very close to Jiang,
and he has insider information.”
Xinhua only had a brief English statement to deny his death.
Voice of America quoted an analyst that as the CCP waited
for a dozen hours before making a simple statement,
this made people even more suspicious.
The regime’s censorship on the news has reached record level.
The Central Propaganda Department has issue a ban of news
related to Jiang’s death, and
the media can only publish Xinhua-issued information.
After Xinhua denied Jiang’s death, insider information said,
Jiang suffered from massive cerebral infraction.
He is brain dead and only sustaining life through a ventilator.
Hong Kong China Affairs Commentator Willy Lam said,
“There are lots of rumors about Jiang in Beijing and Shanghai.
However, it’s pretty clear that he is out of the game;
his health is very bad and very unlikely to recover.
He can’t exert much control anymore. ”
Hong Kong’s Open magazine editor Jin Zhong pointed out,
Jiang’s death affects the power struggle between Tuanpai
(people originally from Youth League) and Jiang’s followers.
Jiang’s death would affect personnel arrangement of CCP.
Even within the CCP, Jiang is a controversial figure.
Chinese scholar on WWII, Liu Jiaping, wrote an open letter
to expose Jiang and his birth father as Japanese spies.
Jiang later became an informer working for the former USSR.
After coming into power, Jiang gave away
1.5 million square km of Chinese territories to Russia.
Current Issue Commentator Zhang Tianliang pointed out,
regardless of being dead or alive, Jiang is treated as dead.
He is a traitor, robber and represents the evil Communist cult.
Zhang, “Repudiating Jiang Zemin is like repudiating the CCP.
Hu Jintao can gain personal benefit from repudiating Jiang.
This may represent a choice to Hu.
If he still upholds the CCP or Jiang’s policies,
he will end up being tried and punished along with Jiang.”
In July 1999, Jiang started the brutal persecution against
Falun Gong practitioners. According to incomplete statics,
over 3400 practitioners died from the persecution.
Tens of millions suffered from torture, brainwashing,
blackmailing and other forms of persecution.
Chair of China Human Rights Watch, Qing Yongmin, said,
“There is a Chinese saying, if the culprit doesn’t die,
the country and society cannot be in peace.
Jiang has gone too far in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.
For this crime alone, he must be brought to the trial of history.”
So far, Falun Gong practitioners have filed over 50 lawsuits
in 30 countries, including “crimes against humanity,”
“torture,” and “genocide” against Jiang Zemin
and more than 30 other CCP officials.
Columbia University Dr. Li Tianxiao pointed out that,
people’s celebration fireworks show their disgust of Jiang
and are a warning to Hu Jintao.
If Hu chooses to carry the baggage Jiang left,
he will go down with the CCP,
If he brings Jiang to justice, disintegrates the CCP,
he will save himself.
