Self-Immolators “Not Mad”
Self-immolations arising from forced demolition
have been occurring frequently across China lately.
The State Council’s New Regulation on Demolition
released in January did not stop these protests.
China’s Economy Information Daily reported
that some researchers believed it was a result
of the high-centralization and land revenue policy.
According to Human Rights Defenders Website,
Wuhu Sanshan District government, Anhui province,
used force to acquire peasant Wang Dedong’s
three paddy fields. In November 20, 2010,
Wang poured gasoline on his body and burned
himself badly in the village party leader’s office,
after failing to be heard by local authorities.
June 3, 2011, Wang was arrested of arson.
Wang Dexi (Dedong’s brother): “I got a notice
on May 30, saying he was arrested for arson.
Then I got a notice of arrest on June 3. On June 8,
the case went to court. The court told us that
we need a lawyer. A lawyer is useless. The police,
prosecutor, and judge are all under control of CCP
(Chinese Communist Party). How could we,
common peasants, fight legal battles with you?”
The case received much attention online, with posts
saying, “It’s so shocking. Why does the CCP
force these acquisitions?” “China has become
such a dark country, so chilling.” “Why don’t you
learn from the Jianxi bomber, why burn yourself?”
Xu Xiang (“I Want Justice” Network webmaster):
“Even if he didn’t burn any public property,
CCP would still incriminate him. Wang failed to die
and was arrested. No words can express my anger.”
Forced land acquisitions go hand in hand with
CCP officials’ corruption. Before Wang’s incident,
Wuhu Sanshan Demolition Management Office
Deputy Director Zhang Xianzhong,
was sentenced to 12 years prison for accepting bribery.
Across China, anti-demolition self-immolations
occur often. Last January in Yanchen, Jiangsu,
March in Lianyungang. In April, Yu Bingyin
from Binhu District, Wuxi city, and Yao Geng,
Nanchang District, Wuxi, have self-immolated too.
Last September, 3 persons in Zhong Ruqin’s family
in Fuzhou ,Jiangxi, self-immolated.
County Head Su Jianguo led police in removing the bodies.
Last October, 70 year old Cui Dexi in Mishan,
Heilongjian self-immolated on his roof
in protest against these demolitions.
Last Nov, Entrepreneur Xi Ling in Ningbo,Zhejiang
province self-immolated to protest demolition,
causing 3rd degree burns.
Last November, Harbin, Heilongjiang, former CCP
secretary of Urban Development Division,
Huang Dequan and his two sons self-immolated.
They were accused of violent resistance to law.
January 9, 2011, a petitioner from Hebei, Li Jinsheng
self-immolated near Beijing Zhongnanhai,
and was detained. In 2008, Li was badly beaten
by village officials for land disputes.
His son was framed and received one year prison term.
January 24, 2011, a resident in Huludao, Liaoning
self-immolated, protesting against forced demolition.
In April 20, a graduate student from Beijing
Aerospace University, Zhang Jun asked for help online.
His home in Ezhou, Hubei was demolished.
His mother self-immolated,
receiving burns to 45% of her body.
April 22, 2011, a resident in Juzhou, Hunan Province,
Wang Jiazheng, climbed to his roof in an attempt
to self-immolate, but fell from the roof and died.
May 10, 2011, 53 year old Zhang Guihua
in Xinghua, Jiangsu self-immolated to protest
a court order to demolish his house.
May 18, entrepreneur Xie Peng from Yangzhou,
Jiangsu protested against the brutal beatings
by demolition officials and burned himself in front
of the city hall, receiving burns to 49% of his body.
Beijing Human Rights lawyer, Jiang Tianyong:
“People are desperate. They were not mad people
or extremists to begin with. They tried many ways,
including appealing to local officials, courts,
filling petitions to higher authorities,
but none would help. Even the right of resorting
to a legal remedy was deprived. By doing so,
they often end up being arrested,
sent to a labor camp, or sentences to prison.”
A Ministry of Land report said, in the first season
of 2011, illegal land acquisition cases reached
nearly 10,000, rising by 2.5% since last year.
Human rights defenders said that with the economy
slowing down, CCP increased its effort to rob land
and property from people, driving many desperate.
