CCP Tightens Grip for June 4
In fear of another June 4 Movement,
trigged by democratic movements in North Africa
and the Middle East, the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) has tightened control. China’s human rights
situation is in its worst state since 1989’s June 4.
Former pro-democracy leaders believe
that although CCP might suppress the protests,
conflicts related to the June 4 Movement still exist.
Once they start, this will be the end of CCP’ regime.
Although the CCP is trying to play down June 4
and censors any information on it,
the June 4 Movement is not forgotten. Activities
are held all over the world to commemorate June 4.
Student leader, Wang Dan, thinks the causes
of the 1989 democratic movement were
a widened social gap, suppression of democracy,
and a halting of reforms. The students requested to
“eliminate corruption, promote democracy, reform.”
They quickly received support from all professions,
leading to the 1989 Democratic movement.
However, over the past 22 years, the CCP continues
to resist democracy through lies and violence.
Its control on speech and treatment of dissidents
is even worse than in the 1980’s. Take the examples
of Guo Quan and Ai Weiwei, whoever proposes
democracy receives heavy penalties.
Although China’s economic reforms continued
during the past 22 years, they reached a bottleneck.
The CCP has failed to control corruption.
In addition, it has further centralized its power.
Social inequality has resulted in extreme conflicts
among social classes. In addition, Bo Xilai’s
“red politics” campaign in Chongqing
reminds people of the Cultural Revolution pains.
Then, what reason do we have to believe
that the June 4 Movement will not happen again?
Zheng Cunzhu (former leader of June 4 Movement):
“China is a big country. A mass-scale movement
like June 4 needs a sudden event to happen
and be supported by the unemployed, veterans, etc.
It is possible for such a sudden event to happen,
and trigger a large-scale demand from people
for change and democratic reforms. “
Human rights activist and student leader
Tang Baiqiao thinks that China is in a dark age
without justice under the CCP’s suppression.
Ai Weiwei, Qian Mingqi, tens of thousands
of petitioners and Falun Gong practitioners
are all examples of those persecuted by the CCP.
Tang Baiqiao (student leader, 1989 Movement):
“Chinese people have the right, obligation
and responsibility to fight against tyranny.
We should no longer allow the CCP to do whatever
they want to violate the rights of Chinese people.
People of all regions, nationalities, age, gender,
or religion work together to overthrow tyranny,
end the brutal rule, and have our homes back,
so our country enters a democratic society stage.”
Several waves of mass demonstrations took place
in Inner Mongolia this month. Accordingly,
Army 38th, the main force behind 89 crackdown,
has been ordered to transfer to Inner Mongolia.
If there will be democratic movements again,
will the Chinese military open fire on people?
Zheng Cunzhu: “22 years ago when Deng Xiaoping
gave the order to open fire against unarmed people,
he had the authority and old CCP generals’ support.
If now large-scale democratic movements umfolds,
I do not think Hu Jintao or any of his successors,
such as Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang have the nerve
to order the troops to fire at people.”
Cheng expressed that present CCP leaders
do not have prestige in the army.
If a similar event occurs, there might be resistance
from the army, just like the former commander
of the 38th Army Xu Qinxian who resisted the order
to open fire on people. More soldiers might even
join the protest. The outcome might be similar
to how the communism fall in Romania.
