From an Artist to a Celebrity
After Ai Weiwei’s arrest over three weeks ago,
the world continues watching. People in China show
their support in various ways, even under pressure.
In Hong Kong, more graffiti supports Ai Weiwei.
And a little asteroid was named after him.
Not long ago, Ai Weiwei graffiti appeared
on the streets of Hefei and Beijing,
then on the screen of Jiangsu concert.
On April 24, supporting Ai Weiwei graffiti
appeared in Guangzhou.
On April 24, many musicians and artists attended
“Zhouzhuang Modern Sky Music Festival”
in Jiangsu. During the concert on a screen appeared
the words in English “Free Ai Weiwei”,
causing quite a sensation.
On the same day, through the website,
one netizen passed on Ai Weiwei’s notes
which read that under the totalitarian system,
there is no human rights and freedom.
Ai called for people’s awareness.
On June 28, Ai wrote in his blog: “If I were charged
by the officials, I’ll stay silent instead defending;
I’ll give up appeal and any type of cooperation to
protest against the legal system
and show my contempt.”
On April 16, 2010, Ai wrote in his blog:
“You are above the state and the law. You can make
others disappear or die. You maintain you power
by threatening and lying. You cover up, distort, lie,
deceit and rob, but you are afraid to admit
you are the underworld. You use half of the state’s
means to cut off access to information and sharing.
You use the other half to put in jail
the people who have the right answers .”
Not long ago, news on the website disclosed that
Ai Weiwei is tortured, which worries his family.
Gao Ge (Ai’s sister): “We must understand that now
this is the real thing, very specific but confusing.
I believe the truth will come out sooner or later.
However, my mother is afraid
that her beloved son will be hurt.”
The U.S. division director of Amnesty International,
Kumar said: “Even though we cannot confirm
that Ai is being tortured, we have reason to believe
that anyone arrested for political reasons
may be abused to force one to confess of a crime.
Amnesty International asked the Chinese authorities
to explain the situation
and to immediately release Ai Weiwei.”
As supports for Ai poured in, asteroid 83598
was renamed “Ai Star" which was discovered by
Yang Kuangyu, the president of the Hong Kong
Astronomical Society, in 2001.
The renaming was approved in December 2010.
Hong Kong Apple Daily’s columnist Li Ping said:
“Ai Star cannot be seen with naked eye, but shines
brighter by the slander from the Chinese authorities.
Suppression of Ai turns him from a rights artist
to a celebrity. The more severe the purge
of intellectuals, artists and rights lawyers,
the more attention they will attract
from the international community.”
On April 22, U.S. State Department told the media
that more “Sino-US” human rights dialogue
will be held in Beijing on April 27 & 28 this year.
U.S. official said that they would use the arrests
of Ai Weiwei and other dissidents
and the suppression of religious activities recently
to have a dialogue and make a stand
before the Chinese communist regime.
