“Property Market Gala” Mocks Real Estate Corruption
An online “Property Market New Year Gala 2011″
quickly became popular with netizens.
This video used the footage of CCTV New Year Gala
and adapted its lines and lyrics into a satire of
China’s property market and its abnormal phenomena.
The 18-min video first appeared on 163.com.
It gained immediate online popularity soon after.
It is now on the homepages of many Chinese sites.
The video was produced by “Cosmic Mars TV.”
It featured several major issues in China in 2010,
including the drunk driving case of “My dad is Li Gang."
The video also mocked CCP’s Confucius Institute
and several skits originally made to praise the CCP.
At the start of the video, the CCTV gala hosts
were turned into real estate developers, sales ladies,
real estate brokers, “house slaves”, bankers and
people refusing to relinquish their homes to authorities.
In this show, police chief Li Gang’s son,
who killed a person when drunk driving, was featured.
Host: What are you from?
Li Gang Junior: I come from a wonderful country.
My Chinese name is Li Xiaogang.
Host: Then Li Gang is your father?
Li: You are so intelligent! Let me recite a poem:
I sit and watch house prices soaring.
I don’t worry, because my dad is Li Gang.
(singing) We have five houses.
My dad is a powerful deputy police chief.
It is a satire based on the true story of Li Gang.
His drunk driving son killed a person in a car accident.
As a deputy director of local police bureau,
Li was revealed by netizens to have five houses.
The lyrics of a song on the CCTV gala were altered:
Lyrics: In this brilliant spring, to buy a house,
I need to sell everything and borrow from my parents.
I thought my pain would be gone when I have a house,
but I feel now my mortgage is an unbearable burden.
I fear illness, unemployment, and soaring inflation.
In regards to Property Market Gala’s popularity,
163.com real estate forum’s articles attribute
its success to the producer’s professional editing
and dubbing,
and to its featured property market phenomena,
with which netizens can easily identify.
In 2010, the first “Property Market Gala"
was introduced, with tens of millions of hits.
It was named “the most popular online event in 2010."
“China Youth Daily" even commented that
the government officials should watch this video.
Some netizens said: The producer is a genius.
I have been waiting for 2011 version for a year.
They recommended to show the video nationwide.

The grassroots class lacks rights of speech.
