The completion of the Saemangeum Seawall has South Korean officials proud. They say the seawall is the longest in the world, at 21 miles long. On Tuesday, an opening ceremony took place atop the wall.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak says that the wall will change South Korea’s history.
[Lee Myung-bak, South Korean President]:
“The Saemangeum Seawall is not just a seawall, but it will be an economic highway in the South Korean future toward the world, crossing Northeast Asia."
He says the wall will also boost the country’s economy, as it incorporates a road that will link South Korea with other Asian countries.
[Lee Myung-bak, South Korean President]:
“Saemangeum is the center of the West Sea, linking the Chinese East Sea economic zone and the Japanese Southwest coast. It has 51 cities with a population of at least one million each and two-billion-population markets within a three-hour long flight."
The wall encloses more than 160 square miles of tidal mudflats which the government plans to reclaim and transform into an area for green industry, leisure and agriculture by 2020.
However, conservation groups say the project has destroyed wetlands, killed migratory birds and pushed endangered species toward extinction.
The multi-billion dollar project began in 1991. The construction of the wall had been hampered for years by protests and clashes with police.
But construction resumed when authorities agreed to address environmental concerns.
