Disturbing Scenes from Tacky Rich Chinese Tourists
Bizarre behavior has been observed among many
wealthy Chinese tourists or immigrants.
For example, middle aged Chinese women were arrested
due to the loudness of their fitness dance music
in New York;
A group of 7,000 Chinese tourists recently gathered in LA
and sang the anthem of the People’s Republic
of China, and raised the national flag;
Not to mention Chinese tycoon Chen Guangbiao’s
New York ads about free lunch and cash to the poor.
Last August, media reported that residents in Sunset Park,
Brooklyn, New York complained of the noise generated
by the Chinese doing fitness dancing with loud music.
Multiple complaints had the police arrest the leader
and issue a subpoena.
He Zhe, screenwriter and vice president of Peking University
PEN Club, indicates that some poorly educated Chinese
do not know how to consider, nor avoid imposing on others.
He Zhe: “Another fact is that being denied information
has made many Chinese unaware of boundaries.
They do not understand the international community,
but only being self-righteous.
Their fitness dancing in public can be disturbing to others
who are entitled to call the police."
This May, a direct-marketing company hosted 7,000 Chinese
tourists arriving on 70 different flights to an LA conference
and banquet.
With a reservation of 12,000 rooms in 30 hotels, this tourist
group was estimated to bring $ 85 million to the hotels.
They took group photos, sang the Chinese national anthem,
raised the national flag, and crossed the street all together.
They attracted many passer-by onlookers.
Then in June, Chinese tycoon Chen Guangbiao had another
show in New York.
His ads in the New York Times claimed to entertain the poor
with free lunch and $300 in cash.
He put his photo and the photo of Lei Feng together.
On the day of the charity meal, Chen had a bunch of local
Chinese and several homeless New Yorkers wear Red Army
uniforms.
Due to space limitation, many homeless were turned away
at the restaurant door, causing discontent and protest.
The New York City Rescue Mission had worked
with Chen Guangbiao on the charity lunch event.
Michelle Tolson, spokesperson, said it would not have
collaborated with Chen had it known that the controversial
philanthropist planned on giving homeless people cash,
reports Sina’s financial news web portal.
Among the many comments on Chen’s personal show in NY,
media and Internet users invariably described his behavior
as “bizarre".
Gu Chuan, visiting scholar at the Institute for the
Study of Human Rights at Columbia University,
says that some wealthy Chinese behave in the US,
in line with the regime’s official propaganda.
Official support might be behind it.
Gu Chuan: “Chen Guangbiao’s charity is in fact hypocrisy.
It is a fake. In the name of charity he gained personal fame.
His real charity could have been done to the many poor in China.
In the US, there is a sound system of charity."
During the charity meal, Chen Guangbiao once again brought
in the facially disfigured mother and daughter.
The pair had made their show early this year when Chen
staged the farce of acquiring the New York Times.
They had claimed themselves as the Falun Gong practitioners
who conducted the self-immolation in 2001.
However, their true identity is questionable.
In 2001, the international development organization
for education in the United Nations report has pointed out
that the Tiananmen self-immolation incident
was actually a planned plot.
He Zhe indicates that international media might not realize
Chen Guangbiao’s political character.
He Zhe: “Each of his charity events was accompanied
by a political goal, a political symbol.
Basically he is a political figure.
I do not think he is a philanthropist.
A genuine philanthropist will not link themselves to politics."
Radio France International reported that, when wealthy
Chinese moms enjoy fitness dance in foreign countries,
the poor Chinese moms are struggling against injustice
and hardship in China.
Four elderly Chinese women recently stripped themselves
naked in front of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing,
crying for the persecution their innocent children are suffering.
Instead of feeling bizarre, people were empathizing
with their sad and shocking experience.
