June 4th Activists Released – Others Remain in Custody
As the 25th anniversary of June 4th Incident passes away,
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) begins to release
some relevant dissidents one after another,
including “Tiananmen Mother” Ding Zilin,
former CCP leader Zhao Ziyang’s secretary Bao Tong,
retired professor of Shandong University Sun Wenguang
and former journalist of Shaanxi TV Station Ma Xiaoming.
Famous Beijing human rights activist Hu Jia was also
freed after 104 days of house arrest.
On the other hand, there are many others remaining in custody.
To cover the truth of Tiananmen massacre 25 years ago,
the CCP authority had put a lot of civil activists into
detention, house arrest or forced “travel” ahead of June 4.
After the 25th anniversary of June 4th Incident,
some of them were released by the CCP.
Several individuals were released on bail after June 4.
The list includes Hao Jian, a professor of Beijing Film
Academy arrested for attending a June 4th seminar;
Xu Youyu, a scholar of the Chinese Academy
of Social Sciences; Hu Shigen and Liu Di,
who are both Chinese writers.
Those who had been “forced” in travel, including
Bao Tong, Ding Zilin, Sun Wenguang, Ma Xiaoming
and human rights activist Yedu, also returned home.
Hu Jia, who started the “Return to Tiananmen Movement”,
was also freed from the 104-day house arrest.
Hu Jia said, he was not stopped going out on June 8.
On that day, he finally achieved his wish of returning
to Tiananmen, and had taken photos wearing black.
Hu Jia, Beijing human rights activist:”I don’t care
whether anyone interferes with me or tracks me.
I just do what I should do when arriving there.
I am the founder of the movement so certainly
I should visit Tiananmen in person.
I had done the same on the 1st anniversary of June 4th
in 1990, as well as on the 15th anniversary.”
Hu Jia said, although he is no longer in house arrest,
there are still state security officers monitoring him.
It is still possible that the CCP will punish him later.
Former professor of Shandong University Sun Wenguang
and his wife had been suppressed for attending
the commemoration of June 4th .
Since the end of May, they had been forced into house
arrest in Changdao and Weihai of Shandong province
for ten days by two state security officers.
Sun Wenguang:”The CCP authority strengthened control
as June 4 approached.
There were guards outside my home 24 days a day.
Later they presented the idea of “travelling”.
As I had released four articles on June 4th Incident
and nobody could meet me anywhere with 20 guards
around my home, I agreed to go with them.”
Former journalist of Shaaxi TV Station Ma Xiaoming
said, on May 28, he was brought to a small town in
Sichuan for house arrest by state security officers.
He was not permitted to go home until June 6.
Ma Xiaoming:”Things like that had happened many
times before, especially around the Two Meetings,
Qingming festival and June 4th.
The CCP is still essentially restricting freedom of
Chinese citizens.”
Ma Xiaoming said they had held commemoration
activities on June 4th every year.
However, the control in 2014 had been especially strict.
On May 18, Ma and others decided to make an early
commemoration for June 4th .
They only got time to light candles and bow three times,
then were forcibly dispersed by dozens of police officers.
Bao Tong, secretary of former CCP leader Zhao Ziyang,
was also secretly brought to other places for house arrest.
He was not released until the evening of June 7.
Bao criticized the CCP’s moves to silence
citizens with taxpayers money.
Bao Tong:”To block us from speaking, the CCP authority
spent a lot of human, material and financial resources
for such ridiculous purposes.
This is very bad. I hope they can correct their mistakes
as soon as possible.
Otherwise they can never live a peaceful life
worrying about the same thing year after year.”
Although the CCP had released some relevant activists
of June 4th Incident, many others were still under
criminal detention.
Those include Pu Zhiqiang, a rights lawyer arrested
for attending a June 4th Incident seminar;
Tang Jingling, a lawyer and founder of
the Civil Disobedience Movement;
Gao Yu, a senior media worker;
Yu Shiwen and Yin Zheng’an who had attended
public commemoration of the June 4th Incident;
Shi Yu, a journalist; and Zhao Mu, director of
China’s Sohu blog who mocked Mao Zedong
as the Eastern Lightning archbishop.
Ma Xiaoming said, whenever “sensitive dates” come,
the CCP would massively arrest civil activists
in the name of “stability maintenance”.
These criminal acts, simply serve to
hide the authority’s inward fears.
Ma Xiaoming:”As darkness and corruption spreads
among our society, more Chinese people,
especially petitioners, are recalling the democratic
movement of 1989, and those heroes who sacrificed
themselves for China’s democratization.
They commemorate those heroes and the spectacular
democratic moment in 1989.
For this reason, the CCP’s governing group
has been extremely frightened.”
June 4th Incident refers to the historical event
of June 4th, 1989.
On that morning, the CCP commanded militias
and tanks into Beijing and shot at protesting students
in Tiananmen Square.
According to an internal document of Zhongnanhai,
there were about 40,000 casualties in the massacre,
among whom 10,454 lost their lives.
