Shocking: A Chief Editor’s Death

According to mainland media reports, Xu Huaiqian,
editor in chief for supplement The Earth of the People’s Daily,
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece,
fell from the 22nd floor of a building and died.
Journalists are shocked over Xu Huaiqian’s suicide.
What kind of person was Xu Huaiqian when alive?
Why would he commit suicide?
Let’s see the report.

Xuhuai Qian, 44, graduated from Department of Chinese
Language and Literature at Peking University.
He then obtained a Master of Arts degree in Social Science.
His work, Cool Faces, is loved by many.
He wrote: “Some people say this is a mediocre era,
an era of substance, a stupid entertaining era, and an era lacking masters.
But we cannot just blame the era.
One cannot change the era, but can control his/her own face.
The face could be unhandsome, but can have content;
it could be very ugly, but cannot be with no personality.”

Xu Xunlei, chief commentator of City Express wrote on his
microblog, “Xu Huaiqian, my friend, a famous essay writer,
and editor in chief of Earth Supplement of the People’s Daily,
has been suffering from depression, and passed away at 2pm on August 22 unfortunately!”

Journalists that Xu Huaiqian had contacted before
were shocked by his death. Writer Xu Kun said,
“Mr. Xu Huaiqian, take care! Last spring, Mr. Xu and I were on
the judging panel for a famous literature magazine,
and Mr. Xu’s comments were quick-thinking,
and he was persistent with his own opinions.
Mr. Xu was the only one who would not vote for the winner.
Alas! Unfortunately, it is a pity!”

Why did Xu Huaiqian choose suicide at such an young age?
Sun Wenguang, a retired professor of Shandong University,
said that as a media person who wanted to uphold the truth,
adhere to seeking justice for the people,
be responsible for the sufferings of the civilians,
he sometimes encountered difficulties.

Sun Wenguang: “Because the CCP authorities take the media
as their mouthpiece, the media cannot be independent and freely express views.
So I wonder if he just could not bear the pressure under
such conditions.
Even if he wanted to resist, it will involve all aspects,
like his family and social status; they will all be threatened.”

Sun Wenguang pointed out that mainland officialdom
is quite dark, and you cannot resolve the contradiction through the judicial process.
Sun believes that if the media is free and the legal system
upholds justice, people like Xu Huaiqian will not commit suicide.

Voice of America reported that over 10 CCP official suicides
were made public in 2012. Most jumped off a building to die.
On August 15, Mei Jianmin, the director of Security Inspection
Bureau in Taishan, Guangdong, and Xu Xiangjun from Miluo, Hunan Province,
who had been detained for interrogation,
both died by jumping off a building.

When mainland media report officials’ suicides, they usually
attribute the causes of suicide to mental stress, high spirit tension, and even mental depression.
The report quoted the words of Professor Ren Jingjun
of the Public Health Research Center in Tsinghua University,
who pointed out that officials’ suicide reasons undoubtedly
include factors of corruption and competition.

Shenzhen independent writer Zhu Jianguo also pointed out
the leading cause of officials’ suicide is that there is no sufficient democratic supervision system.
After these officials embarked on the road of corruption,
they choose to commit suicide before being unmasked.

Zhu Jianguo: “Extorting confessions by torture
is now actually universal.
They themselves knew even being detained for interrogation,
there will be various extorting confessions by torture.
So they’d rather die than go through that.

They also know that the legal system is not sound,
so a lot of the officials choose to jump off a building."

Zhu Jianguo said that without full democracy and a legal
system, not only are common people in hardship, officials also find it hard to live.
Their suicide was to make a last struggle.
Zhu Jianguo hopes the society will pay attention to their deaths.

It is said that the CCP officials’ suicides were mainly attributed
to mental depression, which is the unspoken rule of CCP officialdom.
As long as officials commit suicide out of depression,
then the real cause of death will be swept under the rug.
