Chen Guangcheng Telephone Interview: Awaiting His Future

The Shandong blind activist Chen Guangcheng remains
in Chaoyang Hospital, Beijing.
U.S. officials and friends are not allowed to visit him.
Onlookers think Chen Guangcheng is in a hospital jail.
Recently, and NTD reporter telephoned Chen Guangcheng,
and was told that he has no information about his passport.
He still hopes the authorities can keep their promise to give
him real freedom and a relaxed environment.
The New York Times has unveiled the insider negotiation
process between the U.S. and Beijing during the period
that Chen Guangcheng was in the U.S. embassy.

Many people are worried about Chen』s future unless
the two governments reach a formal agreement.

Although the U.S. has announced that Chen Guangcheng
was invited to be a visiting scholar of New York University,
there is no progress on Chen』s passport.

Now, he and his family can』t leave the hospital,
and are unable to meet with U.S. officials and friends.
The outside world thinks Chen is in confinement.

Chen Guangcheng told NTD that his foot was injured
during his escape from house arrest.
Now his foot is in a plaster cast, and he can』t move much.
He feels very bad at being unable to see friends.

Chen Guangcheng: “I think it』s wrong that my friends
can』t visit me. This is the point I can』t understand mostly.
I』m missing my friends. I do feel very bad in my heart
without seeing friends for such a long time.”

Yuan Weijing, Chen Guangcheng’s wife also said that
their two children have only one hour』s “sunshine time”
every day, and she only can thank her friends by phone.

Yuan said she is very worried about Chen Kegui,
Chen Guangcheng』s nephew.
There』s no information about Chen Kegui』s wife, and Yuan
wonders whether she is lost?
Or she might be in the control of the authorities?
Lawyer Jiang Tianyong planned to defend for Chen Kegui.
However, he was threatened by authorities,
and lost his freedom.
Yuan Weijing thought it is obviously revenge.

Chen Guangcheng was about to study in the U.S.

It was reported that a CCP official promised Chen that
they would handle his passport application.
Chen confirmed this wording, but has no idea
when he can have the passport.

Chen Guangcheng: “There』s no news. No news at all.
On Monday, there was a CCP official in the hospital.
I told him that my foot is in a plaster cast and can』t move.
I asked him to handle the passport for me.
He said no problem, and the CCP Central Committee
gave a clear message that they will issue my passport.
But he didn』t say when they will do it,
and didn』t give me any further information up until now.”

Chen Guangcheng said he believes the authorities will
keep their promise and issue the passport.
Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of State, who is now visiting
India, also said her aim is to get Chen Guangcheng to study in the U.S. successfully.
Currently the U.S. is assisting Chen.

In addition, the New York Times published an article
on May 9.
It unveiled the inside negotiations on Chen』s case between
the U.S. government and the Chinese regime.
It said that the two governments didn』t reach a formal
agreement about the next arrangement for Chen.
Although the Beijing side has accepted Chen』s application
to go to the U.S., it may change.

The article revealed that the CCP is eavesdropping
or truncating phone calls from the U.S. Embassy officials to Chen and his wife Yuan.
National security even tapped into the phone call between
Robert S. Wang, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission, and Yuan Weijing.

Currently it』s very hard to contact Chen Guangcheng.
Our NTD reporter tried for a few hours to connect.
Even during the phone call interview, many unnatural
loud noises interrupted the call.

Chen Guangcheng: “I really cannot stand this noise,
the noise from the phone is very loud.
It shocks my ear and made me very uncomfortable.
I don』t know the reason.
Can you try to speak? No. When you speak, there』s noise.
Once you speak, there』s noise.”

Chen Guangcheng said at present his greatest desire
is to learn more and can have a good rest in the U.S.
As for his future and that of his family,
he doesn』t have any plans so far.
