Famous Microbloggings Closed
Recently, New Century website server in US was paralyzed.
The person in charge said the website was attacked
because of the sensitive information reported on it.
Mainland Sina microblogging also sealed off accounts
of some celebrities, including He Bing,
vice dean of Law School of China University of
Political Science and Law.
Now, when Bo Xilai’ incident is shaking Chinese communist
political circles, how are these events related?
Voice of America reported on April 26,
that the New Century News could not be opened recently.
Zhao Dagong, the person in charge, said due to a strong
attack, the server is overwhelmed, and the site is paralyzed.
As for the reasons for the attacks, Zhao Dagong believes
it is because there is too much sensitive information now,
which is mainly about Bo Xilai and Zhou Yongkang.
On April 24, Sina microblogging left a notice that a number
of accounts have been closed due to rumor spreading.
This includes those of ‘Li Delin’, ‘Sunlight Yuanshi’,
‘Guangzhou Wu Guancong’, and ‘Long Yitian -945’;
as well as reporter ‘Yang Haipeng in Shanghai’,
and legal scholar He Bing.
Yang Haipeng and He Bing are well known in microblogging,
whose fans are more than 200,000.
Thus this incident has aroused the concern of netizens,
who believe they were blocked for supporting good causes.
Like the blind activist lawyer Chen Guangcheng; some said
it is due to He Bing’s news on ‘cows rely on hormones’.
Others think it is Bo Xilai’s incident, because the two
often left messages on microblogs about Bo Xilai’s case.
Commentator Xia Xiaoqiang said,
this incident may be due to
Hu and Wen planning on a big political action to deal with
Bo Xilai’s backstage supporter Zhou Yongkang.
Xia Xiaoqiang: “Zhou Yongkang is likely to have been
controlled by the Hu-Wen faction to an extent.
However, his remaining forces are still struggling to protect
themselves, releasing false messages overseas.
For example, they said Jiang Zemin came out,
in order to make trouble and confusion.
Beijing’ tightening network control is maybe Hu and Wen
faction’s stabilization measures before a big action;
they want to control public opinion, and also cut off
the spreading of false news by Zhou Yongkang faction."
Xia Xiaoqiang pointed out that although
the network control is stepped up,
Baidu has recently lifted the ban on negative
news on Zhou Yongkang for a period of time.
Xia Xiaoqiang: “There are indications that the faction
of Hu and Wen has control over the propaganda system.
For example, after Premier Wen talked in Germany about
reforms, domestic official media have followed the news."
Some analysts also suspect this might be similar to the case
that occurred at the end of March.
Then the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) closed websites
and arrested people on a large scale, and this was the strike back of Zhou and Jiang forces.
Early April, the websites ‘Red China’ and ‘Wuyou Town’
were closed, but then ‘Red China’ reopened again.
Commentator Jason: “It was said that Zhou Yongkang and
Li Changchun planed to use public opinion to work in a black box.
But Hu Jintao came back, and formally announced
the detention of Bo Xilai and his wife’ criminal investigation.
Zhou Yongkang’s counterattack idea was then wiped out."
Regardless of the reason, netizens seem to be unsatisfied
with the CCP’s stifling of the freedom of speech.
Dr. Li Jinjin (School of Law, Peking University):
“This is not only a legal problem, but also a political issue,
an issue of the moral bottom line,
and of protecting people’s basic constitutional rights.
People have the freedom to express views, get comments,
but they (CCP) control and deprive people’s rights."
Li Gang, Doctor of Laws, said He Bing’s microblog
being closed is a significant case.
If He choses to litigate, he is willing to be He’s attorney.
Now New Century News has returned back to normal.
Zhao Dagong said doesn’t matter what, the dealings with Bo,
and the internal power struggle can’t be blocked by the CCP.
