2012 Chinese Petitioners’ Spring Festival Gala
After the extravagant CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala,
the 3rd Chinese Petitioner Spring Festival Gala was held too.
However, the two galas were in a sharp contrast.
One was full of seeming joy, the other was a gathering
of sorrow and resentment, sadness and tears.
Chinese Petitioners Spring Festival Gala was also held
in Beijing, just after the CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala.
However, the content of both galas
were in a sharp contrast.
For petitioners, there was no cheerful drum music,
no jubilation, nor smiling faces at the gathering.
On January 17, the 3rd Petitioner Spring Festival Gala’s
main venue welcomed petitioners.
Among attendees, An Shaorong came from Guizhou,
and Hao Shu’e arrived from Heilongjiang.
Hao Shu’e: “Every year we petitioners homelessly wander
in Beijing. But our grievances have never been solved so far."
An Shaorong: “We poor petitioners witnessed them
grabbing our lands, houses, even committing murders.
We came to Beijing for petitioning, becoming homeless.
The group’s age ranges from elderly to young people.”
An Shaorong says she sang a self-composed and written
song at this year’s Petitioner Spring Festival Gala.
The song was titled,
“The Forever Unanswered Grievances."
An Shaorong: “Day after day, year after year,
when will the grievances end."
Petitioner Hao Shu’e says she managed to get home
on the Chinese New Year eve.
Hao Shu’e: “I got home in Shangdong. I have a 95-years-old
mother who is paralyzed in bed and my child is yet a student.
You can imagine our feelings at this occasion,
it’s indescribable."
On January 29, a sub-venue of Petitioner Spring Festival
Gala was held at the Beijing South Railway Station.
Yet the sub-venue chorus only lasted several minutes until
the police arrived, petitioners were forced to finish quickly.
The Spring Festival Gala of petitioners from Hubei province
was quite unique.
The program embraced Chinese traditional folk music
performances such as ballad singings, etc..
On January 21, Shanghai petitioners
also held a sub-venue performance in Beijing.
“The drifter misses you – my dear Mum,
The wandering footfall steps toward the end of the Earth,
The outcast becomes homeless,
Mingled with the snow, the ice wind drives my tear down."
Li Yanqin came from Zhoukou, Henan province.
She says it was her first time to attend Petitioner Gala.
She just wanted to sing the song she wrote to vent her pain.
However, the communist authorities still captured them.
Li Yanqin: “Petitioners were captured from the Chinese
New Year’s Eve until the next day.
Some chorus members were captured,
several of them are freed now.
Zhao Zhenjia was imprisoned.
I don’t know when he’ll be released.
If he is not freed in three to five days,
he’ll be sentenced then, I think."
The petitioners revealed, Zhao Zhenjia, a Liaoning petitioner,
was taken away by the police on the Chinese New Year’ eve.
Zhao is the organizer of the Petitioners Spring Festival Gala.
The latest news confirm Zhao is placed in criminal detention
at Beijing Fengtai Detention Center. The police hinted that he might face sentencing.
