Chinese Parents Snatch Up Baby Formula Globally
In mainland China, the problems within the milk industry
are continuously being exposed.
Especially in recent years, local people have become wary of
the substandard infant formula that caused the “big-headed babies” and other incidents.
China’s citizens started choosing foreign brands,
creating a snatch up of global proportions.
Some Chinese said there’s nothing safe left to eat in China,
and they would rather spend extra money for foreign food that they are assured is edible.
Since the “big-headed babies” incident happened in 2004 in
Fuyang city Anhui province,
there’s continuous baby milk powder problems in China.
There was melamine-tainted infant formula in 2008,
then the sexual precocity milk powder in 2010.
Last year, the dairy products produced by Mengniu
were found to contain carcinogenic substances.
The local people completely lost their confidence with the
local milk powder, and felt that imported formula was the only safe choice.
The Hong Kong “Apple Daily" reported an usual phenomenon
occurred, in that people from mainland China snatch up the milk powder in Hong Kong.
Furthermore the Chinese snatched up milk powder all
around the world to feed their children.
Now there’s a wave of Chinese buying milk powder in
Canada and the U.S. to bring back to mainland China.
In Europe, the Chinese immigrants and overseas students
joined the shopping group that’s snatching up milk powder.
German media reported that there are more than 3,000 online
shops selling German milk powder in China.
In Vancouver, in addition to infant formula, even the
specific formula for the elderly is a popular commodity.
The local courier said that half of the daily mailed goods
to China is milk powder.
A Shenzhen import transport agent confirmed this data and
said there are many business that ship the milk powder from several foreign countries to China.
An import transport agent: “We’ve transferred from Holland,
Vietnam, the U.S., Russia, U.K., Germany, West Fort, etc.
You can buy it in China.
There’s many online sellers on the Taobao website.”
In addition, a large number of Chinese went to Japan to buy
milk powder, which triggered a shortage in supermarkets.
Local Japanese strongly urged the government
to intervene and stop this kind panicked buying.
Earlier, a Los Angeles store had an online promotion for an
infant formula.
The local Chinese competed to buy, which caused the
website to crash, and it was down for several hours.
The infant formula sold out in a short time and local
westerners had a lot of complaints.
Zhu Yuqing, a staff member of the Home for Kidney Stone
Babies: “Some domestic enterprises centered on profit aren’t concerned with the quality in an effort to reduce the cost.
The quality of raw milk can’t be guaranteed.
On the other hand, many related functional departments in
the government weren’t managed properly.”
Recently, the “Home for Kidney Stone Babies” organized a
physical examination for hundreds of the kidney stone babies.
Some of babies are still in a serious situation.
Every morning, when Zhu Yuqing’s child wakes up,
his eyelids are swollen.
He has a daily treatment, but his immunity is decreased and
he falls ill easily. It’s very painful.
Jingjing, an expectant mother, said that it’s a good thing
to have a baby, but there’s many concerns with the food.
Jingjing: “I want to have a baby.
I’ve been married for 3 years and will have a baby.
But now I have a question – will I breast-feed or use infant
formula?
If breast-fed, it should be fine; but if I use milk powder,
there’s the question of which formula?
So far, there are many problems with the milk powder in China,
choosing the right formula is a big concern for our parents.”
Zhou Jing, a writer who focuses on the long-term safety of
Chinese food, said that the dairy industry is a lucrative business in China.
There are milk powder problems one after another, and
Chinese milk powder lost its credibility in consumers’ minds.
