Chinese-Australian Writer Disappeared in China

The disappearance of Chinese-Australian blog writer
Yang Hengjun has sparked wide attention.
The Australian government has intervened,
asking China for Yang’s release.
Media believe China is arresting dissidents to
prevent Jasmine Revolution from taking place.

On March 29 briefing by the Chinese Foreign Ministry
some journalists asked about Yang’s disappearance.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Jiang Yu, said that
she’s never heard of Yang Hengjun.

Oddly enough, Yang Henjun also used to work
In the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

RFA reported, Yang Hengjun, 46, graduated
from Fudan University in the field of foreign affairs.
He held positions in the Chinese national
security system and foreign diplomatic posts.
Later, he was granted Australian citizenship.
With the nickname “democracy vendor” and
millions of fans, Yang is also an influential
political blog writer. Last year in Beijing, his book of
blog articles “Home Country World" was published.

On March 27, Yang tald his blog manager that
he was followed by 3 people in Guangzhou Airport.
The manager had since lost contact with Yang..
The Australian Foreign Ministry said that since
March 29 they were looking for Yang’s whereabouts.

VOA reported, that the Committee for Journalists’
Protection is worried that Yang could be persecuted
amidst China’s current suppression on dissidents.

In February Yang alluded to VOA that he was under
“mounting pressure” and said: “China’s censorship
is worse than any other country, yet they continue
to tighten and suppress freedom of speech.”

Yang’s friend, Guangdong writer Ye Huo,
said to NTD that Yang’s arrest is groundless.

Ye Huo: “It is impossible to convict Yang due to his
foreign citizenship and the fact that his articles are
openly published on the already censored blogs.”

Luo Zhuhua, researcher at the Dialogue Foundation,
said that although Yang has been critical
of China’s political and societal situations,
he always carefully expressed his views.
He is a “mild critic of the government.”
Luo is concerned with China’s disregard
of legal procedures in Yang’s disappearance.

On March 30, Dr. Feng Chongyi from
the University of Technology, Sydney,
and a good friend of Yang Hengjun, told VOA that
Yang spoke to friends over the phone, saying
he was “sick” and that his cell phone battery died.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is scheduled
to visit China on April 26. It is believed that
the Chinese regime would release Yang Hengjun
in order to extend a good gesture for Gillard’s visit.
