Going green is the only option for Chinese art lover and part-time artist Ma Yihua.

Passionate about ancient bronze pieces, the civil servant from Beijing uses old newspapers to recreate the costly classical art, some as old as 2,000 B.C.

An art enthusiast from an early age, the self-taught painter and sculptor spends his free time studying traditional Chinese craftsmanship.

More than 20 years ago, an exhibition in Beijing gave him an idea.

“I happened to visit the History Museum of China. There was a special exhibit on Chinese bronze. All the pieces dated back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. I thought the bronze pieces’ design, carving and colours were beautiful. I thought maybe I can make one myself."

我恰巧去參觀中國歷史博物館。那時正舉辦中國青銅器特展。所有的展示品都可溯源自商朝或周朝。我覺得這些青銅器，不論在設計、雕工、以及顏色都有相當的美感。我想也許我可以自己做一件。
But work in bronze came with a high price-tag, so Ma needed a cheaper substitute.
但是以青銅創作成本高昂，所以馬義華需要較廉價的替代品。
Taught by older generations to recycle all unused goods and materials, Ma’s grandmother used to make containers out of old newspapers mixed with water and glue.
馬義華的祖母從老一代的人那裡，學到如何將不要的物品和材料回收再利用，她經常用舊報紙混和水和膠料，來製成容器。
Remembering how sturdy the containers were, Ma tried the technique to make bronze replicas.
馬義華還記得這些容器是多麼的堅固，於是他把這項技術用來製作青銅複製品。

“I don’t think to make art you need to use very expensive materials. Making bronze using garbage shows my intelligence and creativity."

The 55-year-old will soon retire, planning to show his pieces around China to inspire others to make “green" and inexpensive art.
