Who is a Terrorist? Everyone in Beijing Feels Threatened.
On May 24, Beijing authorities stationed armed police patrols
at five subway stations near Tiananmen Square.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) also set up security
measures to screen passengers and their belongings.
Police helicopters were sent up to intensively patrol,
with the ability to carry snipers.
Moreover, Beijing front-line SWAT were provided
with double the amount of bullets.
According to the Public Security Ministry’s instructions,
SWAT can shoot at “violent terrorists" without warning.
The so-called “anti-terrorism" measures of the CCP
are widely cursed at and criticized by people:
“What kind of anti-terrorism is this?
They are making panic and terror!"
Recently new security measures were implemented
at Beijing subway system.
Passenger and belonging screening was added
at three more stations on May 26.
On Monday, large number of passengers had to wait in
long lines to catch the subway to go to work or school.
The line moved slowly through the screening gate.
People criticized this measure as seriously disturbing.
Some said “Commuters cannot afford this!"
The three stations for passenger and belonging screening
were: Number 1 Line Bajiao Entertainment park station,
Number 5 Line Tiantongyuan North Station and Number
13 Line Longze Station.
The CCP set up high iron fences outside subway entrances
to organize and separate the crowds.
People were concerned that they could not escape
if there was a bomb.
Someone made an ironic comment: “This simply gathers
people together so more will die if there are explosions!”
“People would be trampled to death,
if not killed by an explosion.”
Some even criticized the subway company for “creating
opportunities for terrorists to make massacres.”
Beijing citizen Mr. Wang: “Now Beijing is overcrowded.
Everywhere is the same.
The key is not patrolling a large area. It is to resolve issues.
How to solve the accumulated conflicts?
Can repression alone solve these?
They sent so many policemen.
I’m afraid over time they will become dangerous.
I say those armed police might become potential problems.
Of course they are not there to protect people.
When did they ever protect people?”
In February 2008 before the Beijing Olympics, the CCP set
up screening measures for all passengers.
Passengers and belongings must go through the
X-ray machine.
Subsequently Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou,
Nanjing, Chengdu and other cities all followed up.
Beijing Political Oberver Hua Po said: “Who is a terrorist?
What are their actions? There is no strict boundary.
A few days ago, petitioners in Yunnan were killed by 12 shots.
They were treated as terrorists. If this is case, it is very scary.
We all feel insecure as the police can treat all of us as terrorists.
They can use severe measures. They can slaughter people
in the name of fighting terrorism!"
Recently armed police and SWAT could be seen at China』s
major railway stations and important subway stations.
There are police patrols with dogs at many subway stations.
Some police randomly check on passengers,
asking them to produce identity documents.
Inside important subway stations in Beijing, such as the
Tiananmen Square station, X-ray machines were set up to
screen passengers and bags, just like at the airport.
Armed police were also sent to patrol at five stations along
Chang’an Avenue: Dongdan, East Tiananmen Square, West
Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing and Xidan.
Beijing Independent Pen Association member Liu Jingsheng:
“As long as it is used against civilians, it is not legitimate.
The government cannot shirk its responsibility.
They always use repression.
It could intensify conflicts instead of solving issues. There are
problems in how they handle issues in Xinjiang and Tibet."
Beijing police also started air patrols on Mary 24.
They plan to use five police helicopters to increase
monitoring efforts around large transport hubs,
train stations, bus stations, business markets,
parks, other scenic areas and those with heavy traffic.
Beijing citizens commented: “How can such a capital be a
safe place to live?”
“Where kind of anti-terrorism it is?” “It is creating new terror!"
