Ming Pao Editor-In-Chief Replacement: Cheung Kin-por Says Chief Executive Tiong Hiew King Is Responsible
The replacement of the Ming Pao editor-in-chief has
triggered concerns about the Chinese Communist regime
invading Hong Kong media.
A week after the change, Ming Pao management staff
met with Ming Pao staff members and the media
for the first time.
Ming Pao Editorial Director Cheung Kin-por stated that
the best candidate for editor-in-chief is someone
from Hong Kong, but the owner Tiong Hiew King
has his own concerns.
Concerned staff at Ming Pao met with the media after
a more than four-hour meeting with the management
group on Monday afternoon.
Editorial Director Cheung Kin-por, a 16 year Ming Pao
veteran, emphasized the importance of the editor-in-chief
position, but said he was given no choice in the matter.
Ming Pao Editorial Director Cheung Kin-por: “I think the ideal
person is an accepted Hong Kong resident who understands
the conditions; but the owner has his own concerns
and needed to find a trustworthy person to address them."
As for whether the rumored successor is former
Nanyang Siang Pau Chief Editor Zhong Tianxiang,
Cheung Kin Bor said it is possible.
He stressed that the chief executive has the right
to appoint candidates.
Ming Pao Editorial Director Cheung Kin Bor: “He has to be
responsible for his own decision, since that is also fair.
The employee representative said both sides have not
reached a consensus and will meet again next Thursday."
Ming Pao Staff Concern Group member Xian Yunji: “In
addition to the trust of the editorial department, we believe
that Ming Pao’s chief editor should be familiar
with Hong Kong’s situation.
But a consensus wasn’t reached on these two matters
in previous discussions."
According to the Epoch Times’ Hong Kong branch,
Ming Pao Chief Executive Hiew-king Tiong has close ties
to the Chinese Communist Party Jiang Zemin faction
and is a trusted follower of Bo Xilai.
Its recent support of Xi Jinping triggered the Jiang faction’s
resentment, which is suspected to be the reason behind
the change of editor.
