Facebook

People in Yuyao Protest Inadequate Disaster Relief Work

Yuyao City of Zhejiang province was hit with the worst local

flood of the century after the effects of Typhoon Fitow.

Local residents were very angry that the city government

tried to cover up the flood situation, and did inadequate relief.

Residents gathered in front of government headquarters,

demanding the local Chinese Communist Party secretary step down.

Protesters tore down the CCP’s slogan “Serve the people"

which was mounted at the building entrance.

“The People Won’t Take It," is the title of a caricature trending

on China’s internet, portraying the “flood suppression" in Yuyao.

The caricature depicts tens of thousands of Yuyao residents

gathered in front of the government building,

demanding local CCP secretary Mao Hongfang to step down,

and asking the government to give an explanation for

its inadequate relief work.

No officials came out to calm the protesters.

Instead, riot police were sent to the site to suppress the protest.

Agitated protesters removed the words “the people" from

a sign saying “Serve the people" mounted at the entrance.

Internet celebrity Bei Feng said on his Twitter that peoples’

removal of the words “the people" from the sign is symbolic.

He says people won’t take it any more; officials don’t care for

the people, and the people won’t play their games anymore.

A Yuyao resident: “The one’s who removed the words

will likely be sentenced.

Many residents were arrested."

In the night of October 15, the local government used

tape to put back the two Chinese characters for “the people,"

which led to the saying, “tape up the people", trending online.

Now, all reports in China related to the “tape up the people"

story have been deleted by the CCP.

Recalling the horrors of Yuyao floods over the past week,

all major local reservoirs overflowed on the night of Oct. 7,

but the government failed to inform local residents in advance

resulting many people suffering heavy losses.

A shop owner: “Why did the government deny

the overflowing reservoirs?

They did overflow, otherwise there couldn’t so much flooding."

On Oct. 10, a local official visited flood areas, he was wearing

a pair of expensive shoes and avoided walking in the water.

He made a senior in their 60s to carry him,

arousing anger from netizens.

On the evening of Oct. 11, a Ningbo TV reporter reported

from Yuyao City center, saying flooded has ended,

and Yuyao had returned to normal.

It triggered residents’ protest,

and they surrounded the broadcaster’s vehicle,

and smashed police cars as the police escorted the reporters.

Meanwhile, the city’s party secretary said

“During a disaster, it’s already pretty good just to have food."

“The worst flooding in a century can’t be resolved

instantly by human effort."

“The flood constant three days flooding has nothing to do

with overflow from the reservoirs."

These words fueled people’s anger.

In addition, the regime covered up the actual death toll.

A Yuyao citizen: “We think the government is useless,

they didn’t make effort in relief work, nor send their apologies.

Many families lost their beloved ones, many people died,

the government didn’t report the facts.

People protested to protect their rights.

Many riot police arrived, but none of them came to help

during flooding emergency."

Sources say, in order to suppress protesters,

the regime dispatched 1,500 special police during the daytime.

In the evening, more police were sent to the sites.

The state-run media reported 4,800 soldiers from

Nanjing Military Region were sent to Yuyao City.

Meanwhile, there is a notice circulated online,

asking civil citizens’ help.

It said: “by now, many citizens’ heads are bleeding,

almost die, the regime is brutally cracking down."

Local citizen: “Honestly speaking, the entire nation has

cold heart to the party."

People said that the so-called “serve the people" is

actually “sever the party".

Zhejiang dissident writer Zan Aizong published an article.

He says that the CCP’s organs and groups who openly

promoted “serve the people" becomes

the most corrupt groups and organs.

“Sever the people" is the biggest lie.
