NTD Profile Raised As Mainland Chinese Media Quit TV Festival
Taipei TV festival took place at the Taipei
World Trade Center from September 25 to 27.
Many international media participated in the event,
including New Tang Dynasty Television (NTD).
sHowever, nearly 100 Chinese and
Hong Kong media left the exhibition abruptly.
Informed source suggest this was related to the presence
of NTD. What’s the inside story? Let’s take a look.
Taipei TV Festival opened at the Taipei
World Trade Center on September 25.
Media from places including Europe, America, and
the Middle East attended the festival, with well-known
names such as VOA, FIC, BBC, and Al Jazeera.
However, around 100 Chinese and
Hong Kong media left the exhibition abruptly.
Sources suggest that this is because
NTD was attending the exhibition.
This was in turn thought to connect to the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) persecution to Falun Gong.
The CCP Taiwan Affair Office and the State
Administration of Film, Radio, and Television
(SAFRT) banned its media from attending.
Zhang Jian, China expert:"I think it’s a good thing. When
NTD participates in something, the CCP media quits.
If NTD attends a lot of festivals, the CCP
media will disappear, which is worth celebrating."
Zhang Xinyu, Global Network Initiative
(GNI) founder:"CCP media is not a regular
media, so it’s a good thing that it quit.
Its participation is a contamination or insult to the exhibition.
It does nothing but be disgraced on a
global stage, and loses points for the CCP."
Mr. Qin, Wuhan commentator:"It (the CCP media)
is out of tune with international mainstream media.
It’s reports are not objective.
It has to listen to CCP orders."
Zhang Jian believes that there are
two reasons why the CCP media quit.
First, they know their work ethic is too low compared to NTD.
Secondly, they are afraid that on an international
stage, with freedom of expression, they have no control.
Zhang Jian:"Whoever has watched NTD,
they all feel that NTD staff are very ethical.
They spread the truth to the world
that Chinese people are eager to know."
The CCP has been cracking down on NTD.
NTD started broadcasting in North America in February 2002.
Since 2004, the CCP has suppressed NTD by any means.
Accordingly, the a CCP department called Taiwanese
writer Qiong Yao and Chinese director Zhang Guoli,
and asked them to ban NTD from using their dramas.
They threatened them, and forcing them to
put pressure on the producer and distributor.
NTD had to stop broadcasting the dramas
‘Royal Tramp’ and ‘Fox of Snowy Mountain’.
This is because the Hong Kong distributor
came under pressure from the CCP.
It harmed the rights and benefits
of NTD advertisers and audience.
In 2010, SAFRT released,"About Prevention
of Falun Gong NTD Television Notice".
It says that no one can provide
any TV or film program to NTD.
Also, no one can use its program in
any Falun Gong related broadcast.
Violators will be severely punished.
Sheng Xue, Writer: “The CCP’s
actions can raise the profile of NTD.
If there are people who didn’t pay much attention to NTD,
they would be impressed because of what the CCP did.
NTD has been a growing force against the CCP’s
autocratic regime, and suppression of freedom.
This incident let NTD take another big step forward."
In mainland China, the CCP arrested
Falun Gong practitioners who set up NTD
satellite antennas, and damaged the antennas.
Han Liang, Chongqing citizen: “NTD tells the
truth. The CCP tells lies. They don’t get along.
I’ll tell you that NTD are very
supported and loved by Chinese people.
NTD’s programs and DVDs are sought after by
Chinese people, and more should be produced."
The CCP also bribed satellite companies overseas,
and forced them not to co-operate with NTD.
According to NTD’s Vice President Zhou Shiyun,
the CCP often puts pressure on NTD’s advertisers.
It uses coercion or inducement so that
they don’t dare to advertise on NTD.
The CCP also uses all means to block NTD’s
microphone logo during international interviews.
