Facebook

Li Na “Double-Crossed” by China’s Tennis Association

China’s top tennis player, 2011 French Open champion,

Li Na was blindsided by Chinese Tennis Association (CTA).

To enter her into the Olympic doubles tournament

at the London Games.

Li Na said she had never planned to play doubles,

the way CTA handled it made her uncomfortable.

Analysts said that sports in China serve for

Chinese Communist Party’s totalitarian domination.

Under the current system, athletes can’t escape

the control of the country.

Li Na withdrew the national team after 2008 Olympic Games.

She then focused on the singles playing.

However, on June 27, Li was named in an entry list released

by the International Tennis Federation.

Apart from playing singles, she was named to

partner Zhang Shuai in the doubles.

Li Na said that so far she hadn’t heard from anyone

asking her to play doubles yet.

She didn’t know why CTA wanted her to play doubles.

Li’s last time playing doubles was during

the 2007 Australian Open.

London Olympic tennis matches are scheduled in one month,

Li Na told media that she hoped to do well in London Games.

However, the CTA’s behavior disappointed her,

she said she didn’t mind playing doubles.

She wished the CTA could respect athletes more,

but she had never planned to play doubles, said Li.

Ju Bin, former China basketball player points out that

under current athletic systems in China, athletes find it

difficult to avoid the CCP’s control.

Ju Bin: “In China, the concept of “country” is that you don’t

belong to yourself, you belong to and die for the country.

Contributing to the country is a national duty.

In Western countries, human beings are the priority.

I can serve the country, but I have human rights,

in China, this becomes impossible.”

On March 12, Li Na said in a WTA press conference

that she wasn’t there for the country.

This drew media’s attention and won netizens’ praises.

Ju Bin points out that in China, sports is a service

to CCP totalitarianism.

If you violate the CCP’s interests,

then it is absolutely impossible for you to exist.

Ju Bin: “Although Li Na has said some things about

individualism, and she has some individual insights,

essentially she will not violate the nation’s interests.

If her interests and national interests become at odds

against each other, she must sacrifice [certain things].

Amongst Chinese athletes, she has a lot of motivation,

she knows the meaning of tennis,

she knows the meaning of sport, but she has no choice.”

Ju Bin believes, without the CCP’s intentional arrangements

and restrictions, Li Na would be even more remarkable.

Ju Bin: “That’s how the system is. The individual has to

comply with the group, obey the nation,

and then at crucial moments you have to earn glory

for the country.

If [we] do not break this system, then these kinds of things

will happen year after year, day after day, and time after time.

In the future, Li Na, Wang Na and Zhao Na will all

encounter the same problem.”

Before this, Li Na had just lost to Sorana Cristea in the

Wimbledon Championships with a score of 0 to 2.

For two years now, Li Na has stopped

at Wimbledon’s second round.

Ju Bin points out, now the competition amongst athletes is

becoming more intense, and there are more newcomers as well.

So it is very normal for Li Na to be stopped

in the second round.

Ju Bin: “So long as she receives a championship even just

once, a lot of people will study the way she plays.

It is very difficult to keep winning.

It is almost impossible because currently, even those

who are better tennis players than her still lose.”

Li Na revealed to the media that she will return back to

Beijing before the Olympics, and will be in Germany for the rest of the time.

She will not train with the national team in Nanjing.

On July 21st, she will head to London and prepare.

Since Li Na won the French Open Women’s Championship,

her remarkable performance has received attention from

sponsors and she has signed 7 sponsorship agreements.

In mid June, Li Na was listed as #81 in Forbes’ Top Paid

Athletes, with earnings of $18.4 million.

She is the only Chinese athlete who made it to the list.
