Gu Admitted to Murder

On June 22, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported that Gu Kailai,

the wife of Bo Xilai, the former Chinese Communist Party

(CCP) Secretary, has admitted to the murder British

businessman Neil Heywood.

It is reported that the Chinese Communist authorities have

decided to sue Gu Kailai,

and have begun to investigate whether Bo Xilai was aware of

this series of behavior by his wife.

The reports quoted a well-informed person who revealed

that Gu Kailai admitted that from the early 1990s up until her arrest,

she had taken cash from businesses that were

taking advantage of Bo Xilai’s position.

To hide the illegal income, she opened bank accounts

in the US and UK on behalf of her relatives and friends.

This way, she transferred 6 billion U.S. dollars. Heywood

assisted her to open accounts and exchange currency.

The report quoted CCP internal news which said that Gu

Kailai admitted she killed Heywood in order to prevent him

from disclosing the crime of illegal overseas remittance,

and confessed to the murder.

The Chinese authorities have arrested dozens of municipal

officials, secretaries, drivers and janissary of Bo Xilai when he served as mayor of Dalian.

These people were gathered for investigation.

They also investigated and searched hundreds of corporate

executives and artists related to Bo Xilai.

Bo’s People Expelled

In the first plenary meeting of the fourth Session of the CCP

Chongqing Municipal Committee on June 22,

new Municipal Standing Committee, secretaries,

and deputy secretaries were elected.

Among Bo Xilai’s original henchmen, only Huang Qifan

revolted, found himself protection, and remained in the Standing Committee.

The former Municipal Committee members Xu Ming

and Ho Shizhong were both kicked out.

Ho Ting, the former deputy mayor of Chongqing and successor

of Wang Lijun, who was director of municipal Public Security

Bureau, got a lot of attention before, but he was not

on the list of the Standing Committee members.

Xu Ming, was the literary advisor and

think-tank to Bo in Chongqing.

In Chongqing, people described Bo Xilai as having Xu Ming in writing,

(Wang) Lijun in arms, and (Mayor Huang) Qifan in economy.

The local news believes that to clear Bo Xilai completely out

of Chongqing, Xu Ming will be the first to be affected.

Ho Shizhong was called the mouthpiece of Bo Xilai, and was

in charge of the propaganda department.

He helped Bo to buy scholars off, carry out propaganda,

and attack political opponents.

Huang Qifan was a close ally of Bo Xilai in the past.

Huang has become vice Mayor of Chongqing since 2001.

He has worked under five municipal CCP secretaries,

including Ho Guoqiang, Huang Zhendong, Wang Yang, Bo Xilai, and Zhang Dejiang.

He was said to possess great statesmanship, and was even

jokingly described as one of the ‘Five Senior Cadres’.

He has vigorously exposed Bo Xilai this time to become

a deputy secretary.

Mainland Dissident Writer Wins Peace Prize

A Chinese dissident writer, Liao Yiwu, who lives in Germany,

obtained the highest German humanities award.

On June 21, he was awarded the Book Trade Peace Prize,

and the prize money was 25,000 euros.

It is the first time this award was granted to a Chinese writer

since the award was established 62 years ago.

The award ceremony will be held in St. Paul’s Church

in Frankfurt on October 14.

A peace Prize Committee member is said to be honoring

Liao Yiwu with the award

in recognition of his powerful language and fearless spirit

in resisting political persecution,

as well as his persistent voice for groups in China

deprived of political rights.

Liao Yiwu was born in Sichuan Province, China in 1958.

He lived through a prison sentence, torture, and 6-4 massacre.

He also had an in-depth exchange with the bottom rung

of society, and learned first hand the life of oppressed ones and life in Chinese prisons.

He wrote his personal experience in his book,

Voices from the Bottom Rung of Society.

With its publication In 2001, the book was immediately

banned by the CCP authorities.

But after the book was published in the United States

and Germany, it drew the attention of westerners.
