A stray dog completed a three-week cycling marathon of over 1,200 miles across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The dog began to run alongside the cyclists after Xiao Yong, a college student from Wuhan province, fed it on May 4. He named his new friend “Xiaosa” or “Little Sa”.
[Xiao Yong, Cyclist and Current Owner of Xiaosa]:
“At first we didn’t consider keeping it and thought it just wanted to follow us for a while. But it showed a very strong will power and followed us all the way here."
Xiaosa ran with the team over a period of 24 days and climbing 10 mountains of altitudes over 10,000 feet, a trip that averaged at around 37 miles a day. Xiaosa’s determination encouraged the cyclists and kept them going.
[Lu Bo, Cyclist]:
“The dog was very important to us. It brought us a lot of fun and also gave us a lot of encouragement. For example, when some of us fell behind, it would run down the hill calling for them to follow."
Xiao Yong plans to keep Xiaosa. Since the trains in China do not allow pets, Yong plans to fly his new friend back to Wuhan while he takes the train home.
